I am building a new website that offers me more control than the Shopify platform. But to be fair to Shopify–that platform wasn't designed to be used the way I've been using it. So now I'll be switching over to WordPress, which I'm very impressed with. Still, there is a pretty good learning curve.

THE COTI GLOBAL SENSORS' INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Small to medium-sized businesses in every industry are beginning to reap the benefits of launching an internship program. Having an internship program not only benefits the student intern, but also the employer. Hiring an intern can facilitate success in the load cell industry both in terms of today’s workload, and tomorrow’s workforce.

Small businesses often appreciate all the assistance they can get. An extra pair of enthusiastic hands can help lighten the load for your busy staff and free them up to perform more complex duties. By adding students who aren’t inside your business every day to your team, you can gain a fresh perspective on ways your company can improve. Technology is changing fast and this industry, like many others, is not always quick to embrace these changes. Interns are often more knowledgeable of these new technologies, specifically social media, and can help guide your company through this unfamiliar territory.

An internship program also doubles as a recruitment tool. Interns provide an ongoing pool of future employees. As with other industries, employers in the weighing sector want to hire employees with experience. If you have entry level positions at your company, it takes a great deal of time to educate and train that employee because most likely, he/she has no load cell experience. If the weighing industry utilized interns on a larger scale, there would be entry level candidates in the job market with load cell experience. Another benefit of an internship program is that it allows you to “test drive” the best talent for future hires. Many companies with internship programs are attracting new and promising talent, seeing how well they do, and then extending a full-time offer upon graduation. By teaching students about the weighing industry from the ground up, we can train and retain top students for the future workforce.

The load cell industry, like many other small industrial fields, tends to have fewer internship programs. This isn’t a field that you learn about in school. You may be able to learn about electronics and other areas of study that will help you in this industry, but students won’t learn about load cells without the assistance of a company connected to this industry. Coti Global Sensors owner, Amy Allen, talks about the need for internships in this field. She says, “We realized the importance of educating and mentoring the next generation in our industry. Internships are the perfect way to pass along this knowledge and also gain knowledge in return. It is definitely a two-way street.” An intern program can help grow your business and the weighing industry as a whole.

College students looking for internship positions value learning above all else. They are looking for jobs that will provide them with close attention from mentors, and meaningful tasks that will help both them and the company. Many students are becoming more and more interested in studying and working small businesses. Because of the highly competitive job market, college students are finding big potential in small industrial firms.

Coti Global Sensors is proud to launch its new summer internship program by adding Hannah Yockel to the team. She is a senior at The University of Alabama at Birmingham pursuing a degree in Industrial Distribution with a concentration in medical equipment and supply. She plans to work in medical device or distribution and development in the future. At UAB, she is involved in numerous campus organizations such as Alpha Xi Delta and the School of Business Student Mentors program. For her senior project, Hannah is working with a team of doctors and other students to engineer a medical device that is developed to suit the specific needs of patients at UAB Hospital. Hannah joined the team in April of 2018. She is working with Coti Global Sensors on marketing projects, creating advertisements, and learning the ins and outs of the load cell industry. Hannah says this about her experience so far: “I love applying what I’ve learned in college to my internship. I feel like I’m actually making a difference in the company, and gaining valuable work experience. My coworkers have been wonderful mentors to me. I feel much more confident in using my business skills in a real life setting. Everyone in college wants an internship, but finding a program of such high quality can be difficult. This experience will give me an edge when applying to jobs and working in the future.”
