Looking back on my time as teenager, I reflect on how much my bedroom was a haven for me personally; a physical reflection of the mental and emotional, like a validation or visual reminder that I was real, and that something stayed the same. As I read this script, I think I tried to get inside that mental and emotional space of [Katie’s character] - and what I saw there became what you now get to see as her bedroom.🕯️
I wanted to create this space that reflected her mind: a place full of music, forgotten hobbies, nostalgia, soft lace and earthy colors, cluttered tabletops, failed romanticism. I pictured oddly mounted candles, a cracked record wall, plants, and reminders of childhood scattered all throughout in the form of stickers or scotch-taped family photos.
Loss is a prevalent factor in the life of any adolescent. As [Katie’s character] finds herself in that confusing grief, I had to believe that there would be a consistency somewhere - and that it is in her bedroom that she might find her reflection and her comfort.💛 With this in mind last July, I hit the sketch pads and thrift stores and thus production design began!🎨🌃
