Embracing Your Word for the Year: A Guide to Intentional Growth
As the year winds down and the holiday season fades into our memories, many of us turn our focus to what’s ahead. Perhaps you’re listing your goals, drafting resolutions, or dreaming of a fresh start. But do you chose a word for the year?

A “word for the year” isn’t just a trendy idea—it’s a meaningful way to center your heart and intentions for the months ahead. It’s a single word or theme that can shape your prayers, filter your decisions, and remind you of what truly matters. It’s not about perfection or pressure; it’s about aligning with God’s purpose for you in the coming year.

If you'd like to embrace this practice, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you find your word for the year and make it a part of your journey.

Step 1: Your Creative Environment
Start by scheduling time to pray and connect with God. Turn off your phone, set aside distractions, and focus your heart. Think about times you feel closest to God. Is it during quiet moments in nature? Through worship music? Or maybe in the stillness of silence? For me I find myself sitting im my garden.

This isn’t about forcing anything to happen—it’s about being present with God. Let this be a time of refreshing, not striving.

Step 2: Listen Without Pressure
As you pray, ask the Lord for guidence. Enjoy His presence without rushing to find your word. If a thought, Scripture, or phrase stands out, write it down. If not, that’s okay too. Don’t give up—God often speaks in whispers over time. Keep coming back to Him, trusting that the theme for your year will emerge naturally. It often begins in prayer, but then almost like a neon sign, it appears in the most unlikely places.

Step 3: Reflect on the Year Behind and the Year Ahead
Spend time reflecting on the past year:

What did God teach me?
How did I grow?
What do I want to celebrate?
Then, look forward:

Who do I want to become this year?
What prayers am I hoping to see answered?
If I could sum up my hopes for this year in three words, what would they be?
Write your answers down. As you do, patterns or recurring themes may stand out. Look for connections and let those guide you.

Step 4: Narrow It Down
From your reflections, create a list of potential words. Use a thesaurus to explore variations and synonyms. Notice which ones resonate deeply. Pray over the list, asking God to guide your choice.

When one word feels like it’s “yours,” write it down. Post it somewhere you’ll see it often—a sticky note on your bathroom mirror, a journal cover, or even as your phone’s lock screen. This simple act makes it a daily reminder of what you’re believing for and focusing on.

Why Choose a Word for the Year?
Your word becomes a lens through which you view the year. For example, if your word is trust, it may remind you to lean into God’s faithfulness when life feels uncertain. It can serve as a prayerful nudge to cultivate steady confidence in Christ. Don't be concerned if you chose a word, then feel a budge to look deeper.

A Simple Prayer To Begin:
Lord, help me to quiet my spirit and hear Your voice. Clear the clutter in my mind and heart so I can tune in to Your whispers. As I step into this new year, fill me with faith, expectancy, and peace. Help me discover the word You have for me—a word that will guide me closer to You and reflect Your purpose for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This practice of choosing a word for the year isn’t about achieving perfection or setting rigid goals. It’s about walking with God, trusting Him to shape you as you step into a season of expectancy and growth.

Before We Step Into 2025, reflecting on 2024...

As 2024 whispers its final goodbyes,
I’ll leave behind the clutter, the lies—
The myth that my worth is tied to my pace,
And anyone or anything that devalues my space.

What I Will Start:
I’ll start collecting moments, not things,
The sunlight’s dance, the song a bird sings.
Each morning, I’ll pause by my window to see,
A world alive with possibility.

What I Will Stop:
No more "sorry" for the space that I take,
No more shrinking for comfort’s sake.
Busyness isn’t the meaning I seek,
I’ll embrace the strength in being unique.

What Connections I Will Cultivate:
I’ll connect not to impress, but to feel,
A bond of warmth, honest and real.
Through letters, bare hands, and deep conversation,
I’ll build bridges of heart, not expectation.

What I Will Let Go:
I’ll let go of chasing perfection’s throne,
Some days, stillness will stand alone.
A spider’s web, a quiet stream—
Life’s simplest moments are where I’ll dream.

What I Will Remember:
Simplicity is not lack, but wild delight,
Each breath a chance to set things right.
My life’s not a puzzle to be solved in haste,
But a mystery of wonder, lived in grace.

So here’s to decluttering what weighs me down,
To leaving behind the critic’s frown.
As 2025 stretches open its arms,
I’ll step in, unburdened, embracing its charms.
