All the buildings from Claflin's west to Park Ave. were demolished during the 1970s urban renewal projects. The north side of Sixth was spared.

1915!

A colorized view of Helena firefighters recreating in the billiard room of the old City Hall, 200 West Main St., c.1915.

We have the names of some of these men, courtesy of former Fire Chief, current City Commissioner, and avid historian, Sean Logan:

"From left to right, William Hay, Martin Juhl, Clifford Hewes, Arthur Wood, ?, ?, ?, Charles Healey (awesome moustache), ?, Sidney Boone (reading the magazine), ?, Ed Guthrie (taking the shot).

At least two of the pictures on the walls are still in the Helena Fire Department's possession."

The old City Hall stood from 1885 to 1935, when it was shattered by the earthquakes and subsequently demolished. Operations were in limbo for a time, until the City purchased and remodeled the Algeria Shrine Temple, which became the Civic Center.

The widened Park Avenue now passes through the site of the old City Hall, between Reeder's Alley and the Lewis & Clark Library.
