Huskies get a big season opening win at McAdory, 29-28. Next up is Chilton Co. High this Friday, 7pm.
The “Little Spinners Camp” allows girls to learn Color Guard skills and allows campers an opportunity to then showcase the skills they learned on the final day of camp before family and friends. (Please help us by tagging any you recognize among our photos so all family and friends get to see their young ones in action. Thank you!)
HELENA — I was invited out to take pics this summer at lots of youth skill camps, and I went to as many of them as I could.
Here is a gallery of photos I took and edited on behalf of my sponsors to share with you. It’s the “Little Spinners Camp,” where prospective Helena Guard members learn to spin flags from members of Coach Lindsey Watson’s award-winning Helena (Color) Guard.
At the camp, older girls acted as mentors for the youngsters, many of whom will entertain crowds that fill Husky Stadium under the Friday Night Lights this football season.
As Helena folks fill the stands to cheer on the Huskies starting next Friday at McAdory Stadium, they’ll get to see Helena Guard members as they march in with the band and spin both flags, swords and rifles in the school’s award winning halftime show.
Enjoy this first gallery, which includes mostly photos of the girls learning their routines or sitting around in small circles on the lunchroom floor to process what they had learned with the older Helena Guard members. One thing is sure —lots of these youngsters have personality plus, which is a character trait required for them to put on a great show each week.
The next gallery contains shots of the girls, and their family and friends as they enjoy the girls’ showcase.
Thanks to Lindsey Watson and her Guard members for inviting me. I look forward to taking photos of you all very soon as you suit up and thrill the crowds at halftime of Husky football games!
As always, GO HUSKIES!!!

Here’s the continuation of our photos from the Husky basketball team’s historic Final Four appearance last week at Legacy Arena
VOLUME 2 of 2
Here is our final volume of photos from last Wednesday’s Final Four matchup at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena with the Buckhorn Bucks.
With just 4:38 left in the third period, the Huskies enjoyed a nine point lead. A little over three minutes later, with the Bucks having pulled even at 38-38, the Huskies leading scorer, Josh Williams, went flying into the paint and came down hard. He caught a cramp in his lower right leg that he described to me as one that involved both his calf AND his foot. A loud groan could be heard from the crowd as Josh hit the floor and sat up grabbing his lower leg. He finally walked over to the bench and after a short time, to everyone’s relief, he came back into the game. But as anybody who has ever played sports before at any level knows, when cramps hit you, no matter how tough an athlete you are, it’s going to affect your game. And affect the game it did.
Not to take anything away from Caleb Holt and the Bucks, they were very aggressive and took it to the Huskies in the final period.
Still, Josh Williams is at his best closing out games. Snatching back a lost lead and forcing the opponent to foul late sending one of the Huskies’ best free throw shooters, Denton McDonald, to the line. One can’t help but wonder what might have been had Josh been at full speed during that final period. But that and $5 will get you a case of heartburn and a delicious cup of Daysol coffee…
We extend our congratulations to the Bucks who went on to defeat Mountain Brook in the Championship Round to claim the 2024 6A Title.
That said, we are very proud of Coach Lucas McDonald, Coach George and all the players this year. The way they fought their way into the Final Four, two levels deeper into the playoffs than any group of Husky round ballers to have ever played the game, is something to be celebrated!

Helena High School Visual Ensembles put on showcase ahead of main competition seasons
Volume 1 (of 3)
HELENA — Here is the first of three volumes of photos we took at the Visual Ensembles’ and Cheerleaders’ Winter Showcase. It was an event to not only practice in front of an audience, but also to show off their routines to family and friends ahead of the girls’ annual competition seasons. I went out and took a few pics and would like to share them here with you, our readers.
Our premium photo galleries are all brought to you courtesy of our sponsors, to whom we owe our livelihood. Please consider them the next time you need any of the goods or services they offer. I can tell you from experience that they are truly some of the very best at what they do.
This first volume showcases the Huskies award-winning dance team, coached by longtime dance team sponsor, Jenni Russell. Jenni shared that the girls have been to two competitions so far and are this year’s Alabama State High Kick Champions! The Husky Dance Team took 2nd place in “Game Day” at the Alabama State competition and were awarded “Most Crowd Appeal” for “Game Day” as well.
The dance team was also a “Large Varsity High Kick” finalist and placed 7th (highest ever ranking at Nationals) at the UDA National Dance Team Competition in Orlando, Florida. Congratulations to Jenni Russell and her dancers on their outstanding results!
This volume also features some photos from the Helena Guard’s JV squad. One of the next volumes features the Helena Guard varsity team and these girls have an accomplishment to share, too!
Best of luck to the girls in all their future competitions and as always, GO HUSKIES!

Huskies vs Chelsea Game Photos
VOLUME 2
HELENA — Our volume 1 photo gallery finished with Husky senior receiver, #7 Hunter Hale, making a grab and turning it up field. We continue with the rest of that catch and run and watch as the game unfolds into an old fashioned butt whipping. It’s worth noting that the Hornets failed to score in the second half. This speaks to some excellent half time adjustments on the part of Coach Richie Busby’s coaching staff.
We thought you’d enjoy looking at the Huskies’ game stats, too. Here are the ones we got over the weekend from coaches Adam Bice (defense) and Nick Malantis (offense).

Please tag any you recognize and enjoy browsing through the photos of these future Helena gridiron greats as they work to perfect their skills.

HHS Step Club first performance!!
About the best thing going at Husky Stadium tonight was the halftime show and the drumline performing ‘Monkey Beats’ at the start of the 3rd quarter.
The football game was not what we hoped for tonight, but there’ll be better days ahead for Husky fans.
Next week’s football game vs Vestavia Hills is the Huskies’ final home game of the season. It’s Senior Night, and it has been moved to Thursday night at Husky Stadium. Join us there as we send this Husky football team and all the associated organizations out with lots of fans in the seats to recognize the contributions of their senior football players, trainers, cheerleaders and band members including members of the visual ensembles.
In the meantime, enjoy this short video of Monkey Beats compliments of the outstanding Husky drum line! Have a nice weekend and as always, Go Huskies!!!
Helena’s 4th Grade Black team plays its final game of the regular season tonight. The opponent is Homewood, and the Huskies look to defend their record of only being scored on once the entire season.
For such a young team, this group has a phenomenal passing attack, as seen in the accompanying video shared by Anna James of the 45-yard pass play from QB Levi Rose to WR Ryan Ardovino at their big win against Gardendale last week. (This is not an unusual occurrence for this bunch. They move up and down the field with a very balanced offense.)
The game tonight kicks off at 6 p.m. at Homewood’s Weygand Field, just off West Oxmoor Road. (2010 Snow Dr, Homewood, Al 35209 is the address for googling directions.)
The Huskies total scoring for the season to date is 199-6. If you have the time this evening and want to watch some future Husky Friday Night Lights stars in action, it’s an easy drive! I know for a fact the team appreciates all their fan support as they look to close out their regular season in dominating fashion against a tough opponent. As always—Go Huskies!!!
