HELENA’S HOLIDAY MAGIC SHINES AT ITS 53rd ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARADE!
Volume 1 (of oh so many!)
HELENA — Christmas has always been a magical time in Helena, and one of the most cherished traditions is the annual Helena Christmas Parade. This year marked the 53rd installment of the much loved event, and its theme was “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.” Below, you’ll find our first gallery of photos from the parade (with many more to come).
Don’t forget to tag anyone you recognize in the photos! Plus, through the end of the year, make sure to “LIKE” or “❤️” our posts for a chance to WIN a DINNER for TWO at a top local restaurant— a FREE date night awaits!!!
A FESTIVE TRADITION CONTINUES
The first Saturday in December is when Helena officially kicks off its Christmas season. Sure, some might argue the season begins when the holiday decorations hit the shelves at Walmart (the day after Halloween, right?! 😜), but to me, it’s all about the parade.
While this year marks the 53rd parade, there’s a story behind the numbering. Back in 2021, with COVID-19 still affecting events, Joy Childers and her “Itty Bitty Christmas Committee” decided to hold off on celebrating the city’s milestone 50th parade. Instead, they dubbed that year the “49 ½ Helena Christmas Parade” and saved the big celebration for 2022.
CAPTURING THE MAGIC
I’ve been photographing the Helena Christmas Parade for many years, and while I used to walk the entire route, I now rely on friends to loan me a golf cart to make the job a little easier. This year, as in the past, my friends Michael Harris (a Pelham City Councilman) and his father, retired Pelham firefighter Mike Harris, were kind enough to lend me a cart from their business, Three-M Karts.
I reached out to former Husky football player J.C. Sivley, now a sophomore tight end for the UAB Blazers, to drive the cart. J.C. happily agreed to help out and brought along a special ride of his own: his dad’s new 4-seat Gator. The extra seats came in handy, as J.C. brought along another former Husky volleyball player, his girlfriend, Leanna Jenkins. His teammate Aron Marsch came along as well to throw candy out to kids along our route!
A PARADE TO REMEMBER
This year’s parade route began forming on CR-91, with floats lining up about half a mile from the starting point at the Crow’s Corner intersection. I took nearly a thousand photos throughout the parade, capturing everything from festive floats to smiling faces of friends both old and new along the route.
Photo editing is underway, and I’ll be posting these photos from now through New Year’s, so make sure to like and follow our page to insure that you see them all!
I hope you enjoy browsing through these snapshots as much as I enjoyed taking them. There’s nothing quite like the joy of throwing candy to children and snapping memories of all the people who help make this parade so special!
OUR GIFT TO YOU
These memories are our Christmas gift to the people of Helena, made possible by our generous sponsors. From all of us, we wish you a joyful holiday season with a very Merry Christmas and an extremely Happy New Year!
