Our trip to Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge was actually a "Plan B" trip, but ended up being worthwhile! Instead of visiting a very busy trail, we like to be by ourselves most of the time. You know, get away from people and recharge our batteries with the wilderness. While walking through the fields of Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge, we stumbled upon one of the largest sedges of Sandhill Cranes we have seen in a while!

Being the longest trail at Cedars of Lebanon State Park in Tennessee, Hidden Springs Trail is 5 miles long that's easy to some moderate difficulty. The never-ending Cedar trees along the path helped paint some color into our winter day. Hidden Springs looks like it once used to be a creek, but now has receded to being underground.
This was our first hike in a while and first hike of 2024! A solid 5 mile trail that didn't have much elevation gain! Highly recommend!

We traveled to the Shawnee National Forest in Illinois from our home in Tennessee. Along the way, we crossed the Ohio River by ferry! We stopped at Rim Rocks, which includes a short 1 mile loop trail with rock cliff overlooks. We also did some scouting at a lake in the forest for some future camping adventures!
