Story by Rod Short Rickie Smith captured his first NHRA Pro Mod win of the season and his position to capitalize on that success going in the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis Aug. 31 to Sept. 5th. In a recent video parody, a hilarious reference was made to NHRA Pro Modified’s “Father Time”. That...

Throwback Thursday: Kenny Bernstein waaay back in 1980 at Suffolk Dragway during a NHRA Winston point's meet. This is before Bernstein hooked up with Dale Armstrong to begin his string of Funny Car championships. Notice the temporary timing equipment. Suffolk Dragway was run on an all concrete runway at the airport in Suffolk, VA. The runway is still there.

I shot these pix of Roy Hill in his IHRA Pro Stock years ago at the season opener at Darlington many years ago. No, it was not "Photoshopped". Digital didn't exist back then. It was with a Nikon 8008, but I don't remember the lens, I was just there at the right time and managed not to get hurt. Figured I couldn't run that fast anyhow.

Back in the day, I took this photo of Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen’s famed 1957 Chevy nitro funny car at Darlington, SC. I didn’t know him at the time, but he eventually got to know me thru my magazine work. As stated by Roland Leong,[9] "McEwen was the smartest of the bunch. When he came up with the Hot Wheels deal using the Snake and Mongoose characters, it shook the world of drag racing big time. I hate to admit it, but McEwen and Prudhomme showed us the way to the future. They were a lot smarter than most of us who didn't see past the end of the quarter-mile." McEwen, who died at the age of 81 in 2018, raced this car for several years after his retirement from competitive racing. It now sits in the showroom of a business in California.

When amateur racer “Ohio” George Montgomery purchased a used Willys in 1958, he doubtless never realized the storied career he would have.

With the Willys, he won the NHRA U.S. Nationals class championships in 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964 & 1966 and at the Winternationals in 1967.

Starting out with a Cadillac mill under the hood, he would eventually switch to Chevrolet and then Ford 427 SOHC power running as quick as an 8.92-second elapsed time at 134.32 mph in 1967.

Ever the innovator, he would switch to a 429-powered twin-turbocharged Ford Mustang in 1969 where he won three titles in Super Eliminator where he ran an 8.22 at 173.75.

It's been 10 years since the last Mercury rolled off a production line in January 2011, but some people are still Crazy 'Bout Mercury as the old Steve Miller Band song goes. It's still a part of hot rodding today. Hope everyone enjoys this quick story about Ford's mean little brother!

Words/Photos Rod Short   If most fans were asked what was the one thing that popularized Pro Modified, you’ll hear about nostalgia body styles more often than not. Fast times, white-knuckle driving, blowers and nitrous were all a part of the beginning, but seeing a ’37 Chevy or a Willys or an e...

At a Fun Ford event at Epping, NH in 2005, a vintage Ford pick-up rolled through the gate towing a race car on an open trailer. A small crowd of onlookers gathered around the car and trailer, not entirely sure of what they were looking at. As it turned out, what they saw was a significant piece of d...
