Hey folks, i'll be interviewing my first podcast guest tomorrow, and she's the founder of a student-directed, and nature-based enrichment program in Florida. She was in conventional schools for 17 years, both as a teacher, and in administration, an avenue she embarked on in hopes of changing our system from the inside. She ultimately decided to leave the conventional schools, take time to realign with her heart and her purpose, and start her own program.
Given this information, what sort of questions might you have for her? I have a great many questions planned, so i can't guarantee i'll get to yours, but i will try my best, and your curiosities will help inform the tone of our interview:)
Much love,
Nate

I will be introducing this project a couple months ahead of schedule for reasons that will become clear in the next paragraph. Please take your time with these ideas, and know that what I reveal of the plan in this post is an early introduction omitting many of my favorite designs. Even before I had much of this plan conceptualized, I was dreaming of how'd I'd introduce it... so I'm hanging on to what shred of mystery I might lol, and I'm hoping that when the time comes, soon, you'll be there to help me introduce this dream to Hanford. Again, I don't speak on many of the mechanisms I've designed into this plan, mechanisms that excite my imagination and which I think make this project unique in the world. If the following interests you, and you are interested in hearing more. Message me through the page, which you should follow if you haven't already.
There is some cherished family land up for sale that I wish to farm on. The land is a 1.2 acre partition of a 2.8 acre property. The 1.2 acres is co-owned by my grandfather and my uncle. My uncle is sick and wants to sell, grandpa is fine with me buying out my uncle and farming. There was a deal but it fell through, giving me a chance at the property. I have until Aug 24th to come up with the funds. $60,000. The farm-able land is 1.6 acres with the larger property having 2 wells, and an access road. Available for use is the equipment needed to prepare the land, a barn, and additional space adequate for greenhouses and composting.
The farm I'll be starting (hopefully at home) will be regenerative, and bio-intensive, with a focus on the nutrient quality of the produce, and soil biology. Similar farms, in size and practices, are making $100k+ a year with a 40% profit margin.. although, we do not intend to charge the same premium (making nutrient-dense food accessible is the plan). Also, as you will see below, we will be managing our own diverse sales channels, saving 15-30% in distribution fees.
As plant and soil health grow more robust, they become naturally immune to pests and disease. I will soon be enrolling in The Soil Foodweb School With Dr. Elaine Ingham which will gain me the microscopy skills to analyze fungal/bacteria populations in soil and compost samples, and the knowledge to craft the needed amendments. We will be collecting data in many other ways too, such as measuring the total dissolved solids (or Brix) in plant sap - a measurement that correlates with a plant's photosynthetic efficiency; brix and plant health go hand in hand. And healthy food = healthy humans.
The farm will be a nested whole in the larger project: Ssussdriad will be a community-funded/owned company comprised of three modular, yet integrated components: a farm, a bookstore and restaurant, and a unique website. These components will be modular in that they'll function independently of each other, and integrated in that they'll cooperate through supply and waste streams, marketing and sales channels, branding, and purpose.
Support at all levels will drive research and development starting in three focus areas: downtown revitalization, regenerative agriculture, and arts and alternative education. I believe addressing these three areas can set the foundation for economic(community-owned company), social, nutritional, and environmental health.
My team consists of a chef w/ 3 years in high-end restaurants, a landscaper/farmer, a data scientist(Masters Degree in Data Science Application and Artificial Intelligence), a filmmaker. I have 30 thousand books, and we may have an investor covering the restaurant.
One last bit about the farm. I intend for it to be the first of many regenerative research farms in the area to plug into local schools with virtual education, raised-bed planters, and field-trips. By the time our students reach high school they'll have a deep understanding of the mechanisms of life found anywhere on the planet, and experience with myriad farming techniques. When in high-school, internships will offer students opportunities to manage a community owned food network, managing restaurant and door-to-door produce distribution, a year-round market, and consistently teaching their younger peers, learning first-hand the impact they can have on the community and the future, and how rewarding that can be.
I am now playing with the idea of a gofundme where donations = Ssussdriad Cantra (credit) that will be redeemable on a rollout basis starting with produce from the farm, and then products at the bookstore/restaurant w/ special pricing. I'd like to be able to guarantee that sizable donations can be exchanged for company stock when we launch the offering.. but I won't know about that until the lawyer gets back to me.
There is more to come.. but I am grateful for the time you've spent with my dream. Just by reading, you've helped it to grow :)
