Mid-America Publishing Corporation, based in Hampton, Iowa, is a shareholder corporation, with the shareholders being Matt and Jeanette Grohe of Des Moines. The company was founded by Jeanette's grandfather, Willard Archie, in Shenandoah in 1962, and continued under the guidance of her father, David, until 1997. David was the founder of the well-known Iowan magazine. Matt is in real estate in Des Moines and Jeanette is a stay-at-home mom with the couple's three children. The corporation owns newspapers in seven Iowa county seats, Butler, Calhoun, Franklin, Grundy, Hancock, Keokuk, and Wright. The company also operates papers in Boone, Butler, Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Grundy, Hancock, Keokuk, Mahaska, Winnebago and Wright Counties. By county, Mid-America owns and operates a number of publications, including, in Boone County, the Ogden Reporter; in Calhoun County, the Graphic-Advocate and associated shopper, with offices in Lake City and Rockwell City; in Hancock County, the Leader and associated shopper, with offices in Garner and Britt; in Winnebago County, the Buffalo Center Tribune; in Cerro Gordo County, the Pioneer-Enterprise of Rockwell; in Franklin County, the Sheffield Press, and the Hampton Chronicle and associated shopper; in Butler County, the Tribune-Journal in Allison, and the Clarksville Star; in Grundy County, the Grundy Register in Grundy Center and the Record in Conrad; in Keokuk County, the Sigourney News-Review, Keota Eagle, and associated shopper; and in Mahaska County, the New Sharon Sun and the Fremont-What Cheer Vine of Fremont. The company also operates two monthly shoppers, the Keokuk County Chief (Sigourney) and the Dual County Leader (Eagle Grove), a weekly regional advertising supplement, the Mid-America Marketplace; and two weekly political tabloids, the Conservative Chronicle and the Liberal Opinion Week. The corporation also provides commercial web printing services for several shoppers, newspapers, and other organizations.
