Today on , we are celebrating the work being done by Shakiya Steward with Communities in Schools Hampton Roads.

Shakiya Steward, MA, MFT was a Site Coordinator at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, VA where she also graduated from 25 years ago. She proudly serves in the community that aided her in education and development as an individual. Shakiya began volunteering with Communities In Schools Hampton Roads, by facilitating a teen pregnancy/parenting group. She has been with Communities In Schools Hampton Roads for 5 years.

In May 2012, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Ashford University as a Cum Laude honor graduate. Shakiya has also completed a MA in Human Services Counseling and a MA in Marriage and Family Therapy both from Liberty University, Her goal is to use her education and life experience to change the trajectory of the basis of all society, family.

Upon completion of her bachelor degree she began serving within her own community by providing home visits for at-risk families. She enjoys working with families and has a great passion and purpose to serve families to deliver hope to a generation, who has lost faith, are discouraged, broken and feel trapped and are ready to make the necessary changes.

Shakiya is determined to use her own history and experiences to be an example that anyone can change. She is the first to admit that it is hard and it takes time. However, she believes that if you begin trusting in something higher than yourself that anything is possible. She has realized that every experience good or bad had its purpose and she has made a conscious decision not to be victimized, but to learn and grow.

Shakiya has two children whom she is very proud of Azhante, 21, and Nassir, 14.

We are very excited to work with Shakiya and CIS Hampton Roads for an upcoming professional development webinar for teachers on February 3rd at 4pm EST. To RSVP and receive Zoom login info, please go to http://bit.ly/CBB_PDCISHR

Through my work with the Portsmouth City Jail, I was able to engage with individuals who are on the path to redemption. By focusing on their strengths and providing the right support, we can help them overcome their challenges and achieve their goals.

One of my former team members sent me this because it came up in his timeline. I am constantly reminded of the I do and the behind it. I never knew my passion behind until I received mine and as a result, my life . I am still doing the work I have been to perform for the saving of many lives. Working with trauma exposed, marginalized youth and families and seeing the shift to better outcomes is a rewarding experience. Yet there is still more to be done and I know all things are possible with God.

Knowing you’re worthy is less about how others treat you, but more about how you treat yourself.

It is my hope and prayer that at the close of 2023 that you have spent time reflecting and appreciating all that God has brought you through. There were times I am sure you thought you would quit but God held you up. You thought you were alone but God was standing with you and had you covered on all sides. There were times when you were sick but he healed your body. There were even times when your money was funny but God showed up. It is at the close of this year that we should be thankful, grateful and patient knowing that God will do what only he can do, show up and show out! Have a wonderful start to 2024.
