Sharing from our friends at Hobart Hist. Society. We never knew there once was a roller coaster in Downtown Hobart. We love the numbered tour of this photo.

SOME GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

From our photo archives...a bird's eye view of downtown Hobart looking west. It dates from about 1916.

#1 marks the wooden roller coaster, called the Figure Eight, which stood for a very short time in what is now Pavese Park.
#2 is the car barn which still stands west of the bridge on Third Street and was used during the railway era for streetcars.
#3 marks the site of the Strattan Building on the SW corner of Third and Main. It was built by George Stocker in 1876 and operated as a general mercantile business. In 1887 Benjamin J. Strattan acquired the business and property. He remodeled the second floor and opened it as an opera house. The super structure atop was added in 1907 to accommodate scenery for various productions. The building was razed in 2007.
#4 is the large ice storage house which cut ice from Lake George. It burned in the 1920's.
#5 is the Hobart House, built in 1870 by Edward Roper, a three story hotel. A livery stable was behind the hotel along the lake. The Art Theatre now stands on the site.
#6 is the second Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at Second and Main Streets. It was built in 1900 at a cost of just over $8,000 and stood until 1963.
#7 is the Guyer building on the corner of Third and Center Streets, built by Elijah H. Guyer in 1897. He owned a meat market and was active in local real estate. It was lost to fire on a bitterly cold night in January of 2019.
#8 is the Friederich Building which is now 114 years old. It was built by Dr. Louis Friedrich who arrived in town in 1902 looking for a suitable location to establish a medical practice. The second floor was added on in 1923 to serve as a residence.
#9 is the Stommel and Co. Merchandise establishment founded in 1896 by William Stommel and Ed Scheidt. It stood until 1959 on the SW corner of Third and Center Streets when it was demolished. Hobart Federal Savings and Loan was built on the site.

We're sorry it took us this long to post a photo that would contribute to Women's History Month. This is a great photo of two "top women" at U.S. Steel in Gary. The women's job was to clean around the tops of twelve blast furnaces, and they had to wear oxygen masks as a safety precaution. Exact date is unknown but would have been taken between 1940-45.

This is a lil outside of the Region but did you know Johnny Appleseed was a real person? He died on March 18th at the age of 70. Before that he planted seeds all over Ohio and Indiana. Perhaps a few of the trees he planted still exist in NWI.

We visit the final resting place of one of America's most popular legends in Fort Wayne Indiana.

There's a lot of attention going to The Center for Visual and Performing Arts as talks about a possible building purchase are underway. The CVPA sits on the site of the former Lanier school on Ridge Road in Munster.

The school was built in 1914 and was named the Lanier School in 1950 in honor of James F. Lanier, a wealthy businessman who helped save the State of Indiana from bankruptcy during the Civil War.
