100 year flashbacks are always fun. Bishop Noll football a century ago.

100 YEARS AGO TODAY
On this day, January 15, 1925, in Bishop Noll history: The first football banquet in the annals of the school was held at St. Mary's in East Chicago to honor the boys of the football squad who had captured the lightweight championship of Chicago and Hammond high schools. The affair was arranged by Coach Pat McShane and Manager John Hoess. Reverend Hugh O’Donnell, C.S.C. of Notre Dame gave a speech "Football Prepares for Life." Father Schmid then presented sweaters with monograms to the athletes.

Cedar Lake was once the place to go to let off steam and cool down during the Summer months. The Lassen's Dancing Pavilion was a popular spot to dance and have some refreshments. We're busy making videos about historic structures in NWI, so stay tuned for a video all about Lassen's Resort.

Ann Gregory was born in Mississippi and came to Gary in the 1930s, where she met her husband Leroy Gregory. She took an interest in golf and began winning tournaments in the late 40s.

Gregory worked to break racial barriers. She was instrumental in desegregating the city’s 18-hole public golf course in the early 60s. “My tax dollars are taking care of the big course and there’s no way you can bar me from it,” she told the clubhouse attendant at the South Gleason Park course. The club let her play.
