I've read that Gus Dudgeon didn't like using the ARP String Ensemble on Elton John's Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy album because he felt it was a poor imitation of strings, which, by design, it was trying to emulate. The way it comes in on the very last chorus of "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and stays until the end, is brilliant and impactful, in a subtle way. Put your AirPods in and listen to the song, and when that final chorus comes in, you will hear it. This is when I actually first noticed this wonderful synth, used on too many other records to list here. Even though it failed to deliver what it was intended for, it shines beautifully in what it wasn't! Here is ours, through a Neve 1073 preamp. You'll find this and several other wonderful vintage keyboards here, to use on your next project!

Thanks to so many of you, a chapter of the Dirt Floor story ends, and another exciting one begins. It’s time to evolve, and we’re growing. The cabin has been home for the last ten years, and the music, memories and friendships forged here will last forever. It will always be a big part of our story, and if you made music here, a big part of yours too! Thanks to the Brookes family, who will always be family to us. It’s time to return this house to them, with all the love and good energy it had when we found it.
Dirt Floor is moving into our H***y Château, Nellcôte, Headley Grange era, and will be moving the Neve console and outboard gear in the next two weeks. We'll be back to our normal working schedule by the second week of January, and hope to see you in 2025, and beyond!

Getting those David Lindley/Jackson Browne vibes.
Anyone can open a studio. Anyone can buy gear and fill a space. Theres nothing special about that, seriously. What’s kept Dirt Floor on a trajectory for 17 years is a stellar rep, a great team, and killer production. I’m unapologetically confident and proud, because it’s been earned through years of hard work. REAL work. Not some fake Instagram cosplay bu****it. Let’s face it, there’s A TON of that out there. Anyway, I digress!
I can put it all together from a production standpoint, with instrumentation and arrangement. This is not typical in your average recording studio, and it’s what sets us far apart. Of course it’s not always necessary for this to be done, and not every artist or band will need my assistance. That’s cool too. We can also work with any artist or band simply looking to get some great recordings done. We can also mix and master any project recorded anywhere. We’ve got you!
This song came in purely acoustic, but became more powerful and emotional, thanks to the artists willingness to let us take it to this place. There was a Jackson Browne/Dawes kind of vibe happening in the original song, so we just followed it!

The Dirt Floor Story...

Walking into Eric Michael Lichter's Dirt Floor, in Haddam Connecticut, is what I imagine it must have been like to walk into The Band's Big Pink or Shangri La recording spaces in the early '70s. His vision is immediately clear: a home for creation — not a sterile facility. After years of traveling as a singer-songwriter, Eric started Dirt Floor in 2006 to help other artists avoid the same mediocre recording experiences he had gone through. His work as a producer and engineer has gained Dirt Floor a reputation for being one of the best music studios in the Northeast. Steve Wytas came on board in 2013, equipped with his own impeccable talents as a veteran recording engineer for mixing and mastering.
