Mayor Billy Hewes has declared a state of emergency in response to an impending winter storm projected to bring 3 to 5 inches of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures to the Gulf Coast.

The storm is expected to arrive in the early hours of Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, and continue through Wednesday afternoon.

To prioritize public safety, the City of Gulfport is implementing the following measures:

City Office Closures: All non-essential city offices will be closed starting at midnight and will remain closed until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Essential services, including police, fire, and public works, will remain operational.

Trash Services: Will not run on Tuesday. Each pickup day this week will be one day late.

Rescheduled City Council Meeting: The Jan. 21 City Council meeting has been canceled. A special-called meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, to address the same agenda items.

Travel Advisory: Residents are urged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Icy conditions are expected to make travel hazardous, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

“This storm presents a rare and significant challenge for South Mississippi,” Hewes said. “We ask everyone to take this situation seriously, stay off the roads, and follow updates from official sources to stay informed.”

Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their property. Updates will be provided through the city’s website and social media channels.
