Honoring Cherokee culture, ecology, and community connection, Cherokee Nation’s Watercress Fest will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on April 26, at the Saline Courthouse Museum in southern Delaware County. The spring-fed creek on the museum grounds is home to the abundant aquatic plant watercress, the event namesake. As part of the day’s events, land and water talks will be held to increase environmental awareness, developed in collaboration with the Cherokee Nation’s Secretary of Natural Resources Office.

Festival guests will enjoy live art demonstrations, traditional games, a pop-up market, and hands-on make-and-take opportunities. Native-owned food trucks will be on-site and live music performances are scheduled throughout the day with Zebadiah Nofire, Agalisiga “Chuj” Mackey, and Desi & Cody.

The historic Saline District Courthouse, built in 1884, is the last remaining courthouse owned by the Cherokee Nation. The property is on the Preservation Oklahoma, Inc. 2004 list, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Read the full story in this week's Delaware County Journal.

The rain just kept coming down on Saturday, April 19, so Jay Chamber of Commerce volunteers moved their annual Easter egg hunt indoors to the school’s old gymnasium. The Comets hosted Ketchum on Good Friday, April 18, in a 1-0 win for Kansas. Kansas scored the only run during the game in the bottom of the third, when Jordan Haynes’ double brought Sonny Hill home from second base.

The Comets’ defense was very effective, as only one Ketchum player made it to third base and only two batters made it as far as second base, with the rest of the batters struck out by Makoni Preston or their hits caught by Comets. Read the full story in tomorrow's Delaware County Journal.

The Cherokee Nation is celebrating the four-year anniversary of the Wilma P. Mankiller and Charlie Soap Water Act. $23.8 million has been spent for water investments in that time to increase water quality access for Cherokee Nation citizens across the reservation.

Studies indicated the community and water district of Cherry Tree needed $11 million in repairs and maintenance. Through the act the Cherokee Nation has invested $8.38 million for systemwide improvements to water lines serving over 800 Cherokee homes.

In honor of Chief Mankiller and Charlie Soap’s work on the Bell water line, which is part of the Cherry Tree Water District, the act placed a priority on repairing and modernizing that water system. Read the full story in Wednesday's Delaware County Journal.

Twelve cyclists from the Cherokee Nation, including Baylee Gregg of Grove, are slated to participate in the 2025 Remember the Removal Bike Ride this June, retracing an estimated 950 miles along the northern route of the Trail of Tears by bicycle. The ride spans from Georgia to Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma over nearly three weeks.

The cyclists will complete an estimated 60 miles daily along the routes used by their Cherokee ancestors, who made the same enduring trek by foot over 180 years ago. Of the estimated 16,000 Cherokees who were forced to make the journey to Indian Territory in 1838 and 1839, before the state of Oklahoma was imposed, about 4,000 died due to starvation, disease, and exposure to the elements. The Delaware County Commissioners approved maintenance service for three of the 28 tornado sirens in the county. The cost for the maintenance is $2,902 by Emergency Management. The Cherokee Nation is doing a survey of the number of sirens needed to cover the entire county. Emergency Management Director Jeff Reeves estimated it would take an additional 45 sirens to protect the county for a total of 73 sirens.

Reeves also received approval to purchase supplies for the AED, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed classes in the amount of $12,780 for supplies. All county offices will receive the training. Read the full story in next week's Delaware County Journal.
