The Grove Ridgerunners playoff run ended as they were defeated on consecutive evenings by the Fort Gibson Tigers and the Oologah-Talala Mustangs. On Thursday, Feb. 27, the Ridgerunners travelled to Fort Gibson to play the #10 4A Fort Gibson Tigers. Grove got off to a slow start, falling behind 15-0 in the second quarter before Briggs Fink hit a three-pointer from the baseline to get the Ridgerunners on the scoreboard. The Ridgerunners had difficulty getting any points inside in the first half as the Tigers 6’7” sophomore center Cooper Hackett controlled the paint. Grove got their offense going in the second half, but the deficit was too much, and Fort Gibson coasted to a 64-41 victory over the Ridgerunners. Grove was led in scoring by Jackson Gain and Isaac Sheffield with 10 points each.

On Friday, Grove moved into the consolation bracket in Catoosa and faced the Oologah-Talala Mustangs. This was a well-played, evenly matched contest which went down to the final seconds and was ultimately won by the free-throw shooting of Oologah.

With 1:45 remaining, and Grove trailing 56-55, Oologah’s Ayden Gaines took over the game. At the 1:23 mark, Gaines drove the lane, making his layup and picking up the foul to make it a three-point play and giving the Mustangs a 59-55 lead. On the ensuing possession, Jackson Gain matched Gaines by getting the layup and a foul shot to close the game back to 59-58 with 1:09 remaining in the game. Over the next minute, Oologah’s Ayden Gaines would be fouled three times, going to the free throw line each time and making all six of his free throw attempts – ultimately giving Oologah a 66-62 win over the Ridgerunners. Gaines would go eight of nine from the free throw line on the evening, with Oologah going 15-18 as a team.

Grove’s season ended with a 17-8 record. The Ridgerunners were led in scoring by Jackson Gain with 27 points, followed by Avery Petty with 13 points. Read the full story in tomorrow's Grove Sun.

Legislation aimed at helping Oklahoma families keep more money in their pockets ahead of the new school year cleared its first hurdle Monday as Senate Bill 231 unanimously passed the Senate Committee on Revenue and Taxation with an 11-0 vote. SB 231 seeks to ease the financial burden for Oklahoma families by expanding the state's annual sales tax holiday. The legislation would exempt additional essential back-to-school items, including sportswear, school supplies, school art supplies, instructional materials, and computer supplies, from sales tax.

The expanded exemption period would run from the first Friday of August through the following Sunday each year. SB 231 will now advance to the Senate floor for further consideration. Read the full story in today's Grove Sun.

Human beings are social creatures. We rely on one another in complex webs that cross and intersect in ways few take the time to fully appreciate. While it can be easy to see how this plays out in larger societal landscapes with individuals taking on disparate roles (in the form of careers) that function with independent motives, but coalesce to fulfill all the needs of a community as a whole. But what about the ways we depend on one another psychologically? To what degree do others play a role in our intrapersonal ability to self-motivate?

These are the types of questions that occupy Peighton Baker’s mind. An eighth grader at Grove Middle School, Peighton recently won first place in the Behavioral Science category of the Regional Science Fair at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. She walked from the event with an American Psychological Association special award for achievement in research in psychological science, and a Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge Award.

Her winning science fair entry was a study over self-efficacy, and whether it could be affected by encouragement or discouragement. Self-efficacy is a concept introduced by psychologist Albert Bandura in 1977, and refers to an individual’s belief in their capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance outcomes. It’s the confidence in one’s ability to influence events and control over one’s environment. Read the full story in tomorrow's Grove Sun.

Everyone wants answers on whether it’s safe to fly — including senators. The public is on edge over recent high-profile accidents, including the crash between a helicopter and a passenger flight near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The cause of the deadly crash is still unknown, but lawmakers say it’s made clear that this is an area where safety needs to tighten up.

Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma, which has one of the largest Federal Aviation Administration field facilities in the country, said the FAA still needs more air traffic controllers because “as was highlighted three weeks ago in the crash, it’s incredibly important that people are there.”

Lankford isn't the only senator wanting to know if DOGE’s FAA layoffs will make the skies less safe. Read the full story in Friday's Grove Sun.

How much would your life change if the medicine you needed grew right outside your window? That’s the question at the heart of Grove Public Library’s event series: Edible & Medicinal Plants Around Us. The monthly meetings start at 5:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month, with the next one scheduled for March 19. The meetings are free and open to the public.

The library says residents can expect a fun and educational evening where herbal remedies and medical science meet for a health-empowering event, stating on social media: “Join us as we uncover the secret lore of the medicinal Oklahoma plants growing wild around us!”

Under the guidance of Naturopathic Doctor Taylor Goodwin (ND), attendees will explore the medicinal plants that flourish freely throughout Oklahoma, learning how to identify, use, and appreciate these plants while hearing the fascinating stories and legends that surround them. Oklahoma saw more domestic violence homicides in 2023 than any year on record, according to the annual report recently released by the Oklahoma Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board. Domestic homicide numbers spiked 16 percent from the previous year with a total of 122 victims in 2023. The board, which works to reduce the number of domestic violence-related deaths by identifying gaps in prevention and protection systems, began collecting data in 2002.

“Tragically, domestic violence deaths have been on the rise in Oklahoma, especially across the last five years,” Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond said. “We must continue strengthening our statewide efforts to hold abusers accountable and to provide protection and support for victims in order to turn the page on this epidemic.”

The report notes that Oklahoma averaged 115 domestic violence homicide victims annually between 2019 and 2023, up from an average of 90 between 2014 and 2018.
In 2023, 30 victims were killed in murder-suicides and 50 were killed in intimate partner homicides, which is the highest ever recorded. Notably, women comprised 82 percent of intimate partner homicide victims. This continues a trend for Oklahoma consistently ranking in the Top 10 states nationally of women being murdered by men in single-victim-single-offender incidents. The board also found that, on average, 59 children witness the violent death of a family member as a result of domestic violence every year. Read the full story in tomorrow's Grove Sun.

The Jay Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Grove Lady Ridgerunners 48-24, winning the opening round playoff game in District 8 4A. The Lady Red, now 11-13 on the season, lost 10 of their final 11 games playing without their junior leader Rowan Geer, who was injured on Jan. 24, in Grove’s previous meeting against Jay.

The Lady Red will now move on in the 4A playoffs into the consolation bracket D, and play against Inola (8-14) at 1 p.m. on Thursday, in Fort Gibson. A loss against Inola would end their season, but a win would keep their season alive for another consolation bracket game in Fort Gibson at 1 p.m. on Friday.
