Storminess to continue in California, West this week, but a pattern change is in sight

The upcoming break in the wet weather will be welcome in Los Angeles, which has measured over three times the typical amount of rain so far this wet season.

A nearly relentless wet pattern has soaked California and the West for weeks, but relief from the storminess is finally on the horizon.

After only a brief break in the days between Christmas and New Year's, the Golden State has been in a soggy state. AccuWeather forecasters say that the downpours and snow in the higher elevations will continue into Monday night.

Rainfall totals of over 1 inch will be most common from the central coast into northern parts of the state, where amounts of 2-4 inches or more are expected, and localized flooding will be common through Monday night.

To say California has been waterlogged so far this wet season may be an understatement.

Though the period from Oct. 1 to mid-November was rather dry, since Oct. 14, downtown Los Angeles has received nearly 14 inches of rain, through Jan. 3 (343% of the historical average), while San Diego is at 232% of average. Even areas that typically receive more rain over that period, including San Francisco, are also registering above-average totals (128% of average).

For those of you that do not believe that January can bring Severe weather and even tornadoes to California. This was 5 years ago on January 4th of 2021 just north of Chico. This was a Tornado warned cell that produced 5 funnels and a few tornadoes caught on camera. This is the LIVE FEED from that day.

This is why we try to warn people of the dangers of Low topped Supercells, that form on a Warm Winter Day with highs in the 60s and lots of cold air aloft with a southerly wind.

5 Years ago, today. We here in Northern California had the same setup that we had seen yesterday. Lots of afternoon sun, temps in the mid 60s by afternoon with cold air aloft. That helped trigger the afternoon thunderstorms that I caught 5 funnel clouds and 1 tornado north of Chico in Tehama County. That is why we were posting so much on the threat.

Low topped supercells can produce a variety of weather and be no more than 35-40,000 feet tall. They often aren't high precipitation around the core, so that means they are very photogenic. Here are some pics from 5 years ago on highway 99 north of Chico.

Afternoon Update on California Weather

Warm temps and a lot of clearing in the Northern Sacramento Valley with daytime heating in the lower 60s. This is providing enough warmth to fire off our severe threat for this afternoon til 8pm.

With warm air rising, and cold air sinking it will provide that mixing layer and enough CAPE (Available Energy in the Atmosphere) for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop. If you want to learn more on this process look up Thermal Dynamics.

We are here in the Weather Studio ready to bring you the latest as it occurs.

Stay Weather Safe!
