Much silliness ensues, all unintentional, but there’s some great fun to be found in watching a team of guys trying to outwit their own construction equipment. The Adventurers is nowhere near as upbeat as the somewhat misleading title suggests. For the most part, the tone is dark and serious, compounded by brutal violence and a massive body count, especially during the kaboom-laden climax. For Andy Lau and Ringo Lam fans, this one-time collaboration is worth seeking out.

15 Minutes is fast paced, and admittedly, some of its histrionic attempts at social commentary are occasionally amusing. Credibility is often stretched to the breaking point - especially at the climax - but at least the movie keeps things pretty lively. Ultimately, it works better as a big dumb action film than anything thought provoking.

While Blue Sunshine isn’t quite as much grassroots fun as Squirm, Jeff Lieberman has put together a more accomplished film. Synapse Films really pulled out all the stops for its 4K release. Considering its relative obscurity - maybe even in cult circles - we’re getting a hell of a lot of bells & whistles dedicated to a single, decades-old low budget film.

Almost 30 years later, I still laughed my ass off during Brian Cox’s tirade about his anally-obsessed pooch. In fact, I rewatched that scene twice. Speaking of rewatching, fans of The Long Kiss Goodnight will certainly enjoy revisiting it in 4K. The picture and sound are both excellent.

The primary appeal of Earth II today is purely nostalgic. Its quaint ‘70s aesthetic and TV origins would probably be lost on anyone who didn’t grow up with this stuff. For those who did - like yours truly - watching this is an agreeable look back at a bygone era of TV science-fiction.

Though certainly offering some thought provoking ideas and themes, it’s mainly a wildly entertaining sci-fi thrill ride. Suspenseful, violent and sometimes wickedly funny, it’s a fast-paced film that doesn’t where out its welcome with unnecessary peripherals, building to a satisfying climax and resolution. So far, this is one of the best of the year.

While Eddie Romero may not be quite as revered as the ‘other’ horror director who shares the same surname, he managed to put together a scrappy little franchise in his own right. But instead of undead hordes, he served up mad doctors and mutant monsters. In lew of shopping malls and underground bunkers, they lurked in the jungles of Blood Island.

Don’t Torture a Duckling serves up a fairly compelling mystery, as well as some none-too-subtle jabs at the Catholic church. And though hardly a work of art, it’s pretty well constructed compared to some of Fulci’s flakier films.

For a concept like this to really work, it needed someone other than a movie star…on both sides of the camera. He was simply the wrong guy for the job. While The End slightly detoured from his usual fare, it’s not enough to be considered anything but another Burt Reynolds vehicle, and not a very good one at that.

In the Heart of the Machine achieves a tone similar to The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile…often harrowing and brutal, but ultimately life-affirming and inspirational, with characters we grow to love. Fans of either of those films owe it to themselves to check this one out. I can't imagine them being disappointed.
