⁉️ Does starting earlier mean your child will do better later?

➡️ With academic expectations (especially reading and writing) being pushed earlier and earlier, we’re 𝘼𝙇𝙇 feeling the pressure. The current academic expectations in schools have changed significantly from the past, but children haven’t.

➡️ Think of teaching a child to read as steps. Let’s say learning to read happens in steps 1-5. A child must complete steps 1-3 in order to get to steps 4 & 5. Our educational systems today are 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 leaving out steps 1-3 and pushing children to jump straight to steps 4 & 5 when they’re NOT ready. This is the new norm and it’s scary.

🤷🏼‍♀️ So, what can 𝙔𝙊𝙐 do about this? Well, we can’t change schools and their expectations but we can change what we do with our own children. Yes, it pretty much falls on us as parents of toddlers and preschoolers 😳

☝🏼 𝙔𝙊𝙐 can incorporate learning in their everyday play in as little as 5 minutes a day.

✌🏼 𝙔𝙊𝙐 can start with your child early (ages 2-4) to make sure the skills that are not taught anymore (steps 1-3) 𝘼𝙍𝙀 taught and mastered 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 the unrealistic academic expectations are expected. {basically, let’s get our kids ahead before they’re behind}

Steps 1️⃣-3️⃣ all fall under the 𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 umbrella. Remember those steps to reading that are being totally left out? 🫣
☂️ You can easily look up ways to practice them with your child, OR…
☂️ you can grab a downloadable set of FUN activities created by yours truly ☺️ (I’ve been teaching children to read for 20 years 🧓🏻) that specifically target those necessary skills we’re not teaching in schools anymore.

ᴇᴀʀʟʏ ʟɪᴛᴇʀᴀᴄʏ ᴇxᴘᴏsᴜʀᴇ ɪs ᴄʀɪᴛɪᴄᴀʟ

🧠 by age 3, the brain is more than twice as active as an adult’s and stays that way for the first 10 years of life

🧠 cognitive processes develop rapidly in the first few years of life, however traditional education begins at age 5

🧠 65% of America’s 4th graders do not read proficiently

🧠 young children who are exposed to certain language and literacy experiences prove to be good readers later in life

🧠 books contain 50% more words that children are unlikely to encounter in regular conversation

🧠 children who were read to frequently are more likely to: count to 20, write their names, and read or pretend to read

🧠 children who are read to at least 3️⃣ times a week are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% in reading

🚩 It’s 𝐍𝐎𝐓 worth the wait. 🚩
Ensuring our children are proficient readers is the 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 job of elementary schools.

👎🏼 Unfortunately, there is a large body of research proving the methods of teaching in many schools today are 𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚.
👉🏼 Here’s why: 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴. They’re skipping the critical stages of learning and practicing foundational skills through 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺, 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭/𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 in the early grades. This shortfall is masked 😷 by having children begin to read at an earlier age. However, these efforts to compensate for a lack of foundational skills results in students being expected to “read” leveled text (memorize sight words, use pictures to help read words, etc.) before they are ready or even confident enough to do so. 😞 The result is many children are not completing elementary school as confident, proficient readers, leading them to feel left behind.

👍🏼 Luckily, I have many years of experience teaching children to become skilled readers. Therefore I know and understand how reading develops. I’m not willing to wait for our educational systems to make change. For the sake of my own children, I am starting early.
👉🏼 Here’s how…
📍I will be intentional with their play.
📍I will make sure they’ve had time to explore and practice specific skills needed to build a solid foundation for reading success.
📍I will help them to feel understood, accepted, and confident of their efforts so that they’re always believers in themselves.

If you’re like me, follow along as I model for you EASY ways to provide the proper reading foundation for our children. 👦🏽👧🏼

ᴅʏꜱʟᴇxɪᴀ ᴀᴡᴀʀᴇɴᴇꜱꜱ ᴍᴏɴᴛʜ - Do you know the 🚩 to look for?
October is recognized as worldwide Dyslexia Awareness Month - let’s take this time to raise awareness, answer questions, and share resources about dyslexia.
🚩 there is no cure for dyslexia, but early assessment and intervention can result in the best possible outcome
🚩 you know your child better than most, so if you see any warning signs or question some things you’re seeing, ask an expert (🙋🏼‍♀️ I’m happy to help!)
🚩 when dyslexia goes untreated, childhood reading problems can continue into adulthood
**out of all this… my most important piece of advice is…don’t wait. Don’t do the “wait to fail” approach. If your child has average grades, but isn’t failing…don’t wait until his grades drop to do something about it!

🗣 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀! You’re going to want to save this one. But 🤫 Shhh… it’s a cheat sheet!

👉🏼 Use this guide to help when your child is spelling a word and you sense some frustrations.

👉🏼 It’s best to carefully explain the letter patterns that represent the long vowel sounds (swipe for example).

🙌🏼 Here’s a quick chart organized by vowel sound and frequency the pattern occurs.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺?
Before building a 🏠 you have to lay a foundation. If there are 🕳 in the foundation, the 🏠 will stand, but will eventually have problems. Usually, by the time the problems arise it’s already too late.
😓 Too late meaning the following feelings are now present; lack of self confidence, anxiety, falling grades, attention problems, disliking school, etc.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. We 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 to make sure our children are proficient in the foundational skills 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 being taught to read. If they are lacking in these skills, he/she can learn to read, but problems will most likely arise soon after.
As parents, you’ll start to see the following signs:
🪧 struggling to sound out unknown words
🪧 losing motivation towards school work
🪧 increased anxiety/ emotions when going to school
🪧 low self confidence
🪧 increased negative self talk - “I’m not smart.” “I can’t do this.”

🌈 Easy 𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙗𝙤𝙬 noodles
It’s amazing the amount of fun (+learning) that can happen with some of the most basic items.

Here’s we made these…
🔴 grab a bag of rotini noodles (mine are from Aldi)
🟠 scoop 1 cup of dried noodles into a bag
🟡 add some food coloring
🟢 add 2-3 sq**rts of hand sanitizer (this sets the color)
🔵 shake shake shake
🟣 spread onto wax paper to dry

W A I T … Now what?? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Learning ideas…
🟥 sort noodles by color
🟧 make a pattern of noodles on a shoestring
🟨 write letters on them and lace noodles in abc order
🟩 put a dried spaghetti noodle in a ball of playdoh and make a pattern
🟦 write letters on them, close your eyes and pick a noodle - say the letter sound then stack on a spaghetti noodle (pic above)
🟪 write words - try to make a sentence by threading onto a shoestring (pic above)

Studying for spelling tests in grades 3-5? Here’s how you can help…

1️⃣ Say the word, have your child repeat
Example: 🗣“rotation”

2️⃣ Break the word into syllables as you say it again. Touch an object as you say each syllable (we’re using cubes), then have your child repeat Example: 🗣 “ro” (touch 🟥), “ta” (touch 🟧), “tion” (touch 🟦)

3️⃣ Model how after each time you touch a cube and say the syllable, you’ll write what you hear. Example: 🗣 “So when I touched this first cube, I said “ro,” I will now write “ro”. Then when I touched the next cube I said “ta” so let me write “ta” and then last cube I touched I said “tion”. If you hear the “shun” sound at the end of a word, it’s usually “tion”.

4️⃣ Repeat steps 1-3 above for each word. There is usually a tricky syllable in words so just take the time to talk about it. After you’ve modeled, take away your writing and have your child practice.
