The Looper Trio hail from Monterey, Tennessee (population 2,850). They released their first record in 1966, and proceeded to self release numerous records over the next 10 or so years. No major label record deal for this snappy combo! For my money, in their prime they were one of the premier country gospel groups in the nation. This song is taken from their somewhat rare (not that any of their records are exactly common) live album that was released in 1973. The song is titled 'Crying Holy Unto The Lord' and it is sung by their bass player, the 'tall man from Tennessee', Ferrell Looper. If you listen carefully, starting at around the 1:50 mark, the folks in attendance start to really get into it, at least if the yellin', hollerin' and carrying on are any measure. Good times all the way...............

I am picking out some snappy gospel records because tonight I am honored to join my record spinning amigo Russ Wilson on his WPVM radio show, 'In The Groove'! I will be hauling up a satchel chock-full of 78rpm records to radio station WPVM in Asheville, North Carolina and join my compadre as we spin discs and swap banter. Russ has an extensive collection of gospel 78s, and it will be a blast to hang out and give them a listen. But, fear not! You can join us as well. His show, 'In The Groove', can be heard tonight (and every Monday night) at 7:00 pm Eastern time on WPVM.103.7, or if you are not so lucky as to reside in Asheville, you can stream it live at www.wpvmfm.org

See you there!

By the mid 1950's, the Golden Gate Quartet, the vocal group collective who, along with the Mills Brothers had re-written the rules of four part harmony in the early 1930's, no longer felt they had a home here in the USA. The ever present burden of racism and the changing sounds in gospel music away from their 'jubilee' style to something with a harder, more 'soulful' edge prompted their decision to relocate to France. There, they found a new audience and new opportunities. The link below is from a rather obscure LP that comes from Japan circa 1958 and never saw the light of day here in the states. The song is titled "My God's Comin' Down Again" and is a great example of the vocal precision and drive that were the hallmarks of this great vocal group. Our loss was Europe's gain......

Been posting some gospel music on my Gospel Boogie YouTube page. Thought I would share this one here. The Church Of God Quartet (featuring the great Conner Hall) singing 'Old 'Zekial Waded Out'. This record is from 1946 or so, just before he became the driving force behind the great 'Homeland Harmony Quartet' which introduced the song which is the name sake for this page and my podcast, 'Gospel Boogie'. You may want to take a gander at some of the other records on the page. More to come.....

I am real excited to share this resource for fans of gospel music circa 1943-1969. 'Gloryland Jubilee'. An ever growing, ever expanding musical discography featuring the quartets and musical ensembles that we love. It has been a real labor of love and while far from complete, it is already an impressive resource. There is much information to still be gathered and if one is willing to assist with information, I know it will be welcomed. It is a free resource and will remain so. Additions are being made on a weekly basis. Group photos, label shots, song samples, record information...on and on. An undertaking this large will never be completed and there will be mistakes and incomplete information, but, it will continue to evolve and improve. Hopefully, you find some information that is interesting and hopefully, you can help!

Thought I would spin some Homeland Harmony Quartet today. Here is a release on the Bibletone label circa 1952. Always great to get some 78's on the turntable. A favorite group, to be sure....

It was a warm, but not too warm mid-afternoon on a clear late summer day as I crossed the Mississippi River via the Hernando de Soto Bridge, making my way east on the I-40, into Memphis, Tennessee. I was going to meet up with some folks later in the evening so I was making tracks, hoping to get into town so I could take in a few sights before our appointed rendezvous. After a few twists and turns on unfamiliar streets, I found myself in North Memphis. On a somewhat bustling street corner, I spied a still open thrift store that looked promising. Inside there were the usual racks of clothes, past its prime furniture and to my delight, a moderately sized cardboard box, nestled below a few groaning shelves of books, filled with records. I was able to pull out a few interesting items, including the record to which I have provided a link below for your perusal.

Recorded September 15th, 1928, the song is titled 'On The Happy Hallelujah Side' and features the fine duet of V.O. Stamps & M.L. Yandell. What makes the find a bit more special is that the recording session occurred right there in Memphis Tennessee some 64 years before I meandered into that thrift shop. V.O. Stamps is who you hear taking the booming lead vocal and as you can see on the label, M.L Yandell, who provides the high harmony, was indeed one of the authors of the song. Based on the attached news clipping, it appears that shortly after their recording session (they recorded another two songs that made their way onto shellac with a total of 4 records released in 1928 and 1929), the gentlemen were headed to a music school in Temple, Oklahoma. I love the commanding vocal with the great minor key shift this song offers. A fine piece of medium tempo hymn singing that offers more vocal punch and presence than much of the popular music of the day. A nice piece of jazz age religious music that was salvaged from a cardboard box residing in the place of its birth, Memphis Tennessee.......
