A street paper is a newspaper that addresses issues surrounding homelessness and poverty that is distributed by poor or homeless vendors on city streets. The self-employed vendor then sells that paper on the street and keeps the money that he or she makes. For many vendors, this job opportunity helps them get back on their feet and into permanent housing. In addition to earning an income, vendors
usually have positive experiences from their involvement with street papers. They form caring relationships with their customers, which helps to build community among a group that is marginalized by society. Most street papers also give a voice to the voiceless by publishing their articles, poems and artwork. This supports homeless individuals and gives the public the opportunity to understand the issues and personal stories of people that are normally ignored. There are more than 110 street papers around the world, with a combined readership of 5 million people per edition. Street papers are becoming a powerful media source in their communities for the public and vendors. The Greensboro Voice’s newspaper team meets every Friday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Interactive Resource Center. We welcome you to join our team and hope you read our monthly newspaper!
