The Splendid Turntable

The Splendid Turntable WQFS-FM show that transports you back to the sound and spirit of album rock radio and turntables.

WQFS, 90.9 FM, Greensboro, NC | Free Internet Radio | TuneIn https://tunein.com/radio/WQFS-909-s22152/

I'm giving you some music you just don’t get to hear on the radio much any more, along with some of the best music being made today. The radio industry named the format AOR, which stood for album oriented rock. Critics of the format said AOR stood for “any old record” though, because they couldn

't wrap their heads around staying away from the hits and digging deeper into album cuts from the rock and psychedelic acts of the 60s and 70s. The Splendid Turntable is not affiliated with a certain public radio program with a similar name. That said, this program does focus on the culture, the history, the backstories and the deeper meanings that come together every time people sit down to enjoy music.

We like, or at least can tolerate, 8 of these songs. We really can’t stand the other 12, haha. Can you guess which are which?

The 1970s was a massively influential time for music with many different genres either evolving or rising to popularity. Yet, no matter what decade, some songs are best heard during the summer and that was certainly the case in the 1970s.

It was 56 years ago today.
On January 30, 1969, The Beatles performed a concert from the rooftop of their Apple Corps headquarters at 3 Savile Row, in central London's office and fashion district. Joined by guest keyboardist Billy Preston, the band played a 42-minute set before the Metropolitan Police arrived and ordered them to reduce the volume. It was the final public performance of their career. They performed nine takes of five new songs as crowds of onlookers, many on lunch breaks, congregated in the streets and on the rooftops of nearby buildings to listen. The concert ended with "Get Back", and John Lennon joking, "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we've passed the audition." ~Wikipedia

The Studebaker Collection returns one week from today – Tuesday, Feb. 4, 10am-noon EST on WQFS Guilford College Radio for the rest of the spring program schedule. We’ll alternate with the hugely popular Transistor Radio show in that slot - you’ll hear us every other Tuesday and Transistor Radio in the intervening weeks. We’ll kick things off on Feb 4 with the mostly-vinyl show we’d planned for earlier this month but had to cancel: “HIT THAT RANDOM BUTTON AGAIN!”

It’s The Splendid Turntable from 8-10am EST Jan 27 on WQFS Guilford College Radio. Will you hear a Boston two-fer? Ain’t happening on this show. Just tons of splendid FM album rock from the likes of Bob Dylan, Traffic, Joni Mitchell, Roxy Music, The Band and T-Rex, including 3 tracks from albums turning 50 in '25. Not to mention music from artists nominated for Grammys in categories that don’t get as much attention as they should.

Oh, did you think that was all? How ‘bout new music from Larkin Poe, Cameron Leahy, Lonnie Rott, Sports Team, the Fods, and more? We got you. You know…hippies dig it.

Streaming links in bio, and we’re at 90.9 FM in Greensboro.
