Upcoming events and things to do in Indianapolis and Indiana.

January 3, 2024.

Today the company that hosted my website for 21 years canceled the hosting package and shut off the email accounts, prior to this month's renewal date.

I apologize if you are trying to contact me via aroundindy dot com email. That kind of makes it final after 2+ decades, eh? 😭

Pensive. Wistful. Melancholy. ☹️

Three words that come to mind to describe my feelings and emotions today, Friday, December 8, 2023.

I just spent the morning deleting all the content from my website (aroundindy.com).

I ran this website by MYSELF for more than two decades, but at age 73 I am experiencing physical difficulty covering events in-person or attending in-person media events. Darn lower back.

Also, recently the company that hosts my website announced that the annual cost will TRIPLE (!) on the hosting renewal date. It's part of the rampant profiteering and price gouging that has resulted in the aftermath of the pandemic. 😡

To make matters worse, my paying advertisers canceled as a result of the pandemic; they covered the cost of running the site.

Hence the inevitable decision to shut down. The time is right.

More than 1,100 web pages on the site were deleted and disappeared just like that this morning. 21 years of work gone.

On the other hand, it took nearly 90 minutes to delete more than 84,000 photographs and images from the server that accumulated over two decades. I couldn't believe the number when I saw it.

Erasing the pages was no big deal.

But as I watched the file names of my photos and images from all 92 Indiana counties disappear one-by-one, that's when it really sunk in just how much effort and work and determination and travel expense I put in on this website. Memories of all those sights and sounds and places flashed before my eyes.

So now I am retired. Again.

I feel like an enormous burden has just been lifted off my shoulders. Relief, to be honest.

On the flip side, I feel like a failure for not being able to continue with this project that consumed many late nights and countless hours of work, one that turned out to be a labor of love, one that helped me get acquainted with almost everyone who will read this post.

21 years was a pretty good run for a website.

I am proud to have served my fellow Hoosiers for the past two decades by publishing as many events in all 92 Indiana counties as possible, plus nearly 4,000 daily podcasts, regular Wordpress and Blogspot blogs, X (Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube posts, from February 1, 2003 to today.

This is not the time to name names. I know I would forget someone. So let me just say a heartfelt and sincere THANK YOU to everyone who helped me in any way or extended privileges to me that were not available to the general public.

I truly appreciate all the support and cooperation from so many people and organizations. You know who you are. God bless you. ❤️

If you know someone who would like to buy my domain names, please send them my way. Thank you!

And now I guess I will go for another bicycle ride and maybe get some good bald eagle photos if I am lucky. See ya later. 😘

AroundIndy.com, LLC is a local Web site containing day-by-day listings of upcoming events and things to do in Indianapolis and Indiana. It launched on February 1, 2003 and has been in continuous publication since, making it one of the oldest events Web sites in the state.

The idea and concept for this Web site originated from a student’s suggestion in my Web Design class at the University of Indianapolis in November 2002. “We need a Web site that shows what there is to do around Indy,” she said. Back then there were no Indiana Web sites where you could get a consolidated list of events of all kinds. So I started working on a design, and that’s how AroundIndy.com came to be.

By the end of the semester the site was already getting several hundred hits per day. It’s grown annually ever since in usage and popularity. We typically have over one million visits and 3-4 million page views per year.

If you would like to add your event listings to our site, simply use this online Web form: https://aroundindy.com/eventform.php. All event listings accepted for publication are free.
