Here is what we have in mind for future snow totals.

IMPORTANT: Light rain will transition to HEAVY snow during the overnight hours and will result in fast and heavy accumulation. Much of this will occur on elevated surfaces. Moderate impacts to travel are expected during the main event but will quickly melt due to warm ground temperatures.

TIMEFRAME: Late tonight into mid-morning tomorrow.

WHAT: Heavy snowfall

Reminder: A Winter Storm Warning for our area has been issued by the National Weather Service.

Good Morning!

As you head to work this morning we will be partly cloudy and in the upper 20s for temperatures. Expect highs today in the low to mid 40s across the region as we progress to mostly sunny skies closer to noon.

Be sure to drive carefully and watch for any remaining slick areas on back roads.

Snowfall continues across the region this evening as we transition into the overnight hours. Snowfall will gradually decrease from west to east and turn into lingering snow showers as we get to tomorrow morning. As we go past sunset most areas will gradually transition to sub 32 degree temperatures and what remains of our moisture will stick and land as snowfall. Expect less than 2 inches in the valley and plateau areas could receive an additional inch.

Tomorrow morning, expect some slick spots (especially in higher elevations) and morning temperatures in the low to mid 20s. Tomorrow afternoon, we will top off around 30 degrees. Some areas may break freezing.

9:00 AM RADAR Update

Rain mixing with snow and sleet continues across the plateau while the mountains continue to act as a boundary limiting moisture inflow from the center of low pressure just to our south. Some areas of patchy rain and wintry mix will continue throughout the day until the back side of the system begins to make its way in.

Some areas in Western North Carolina have already experienced as much as 10 inches in some places as of this morning.

Good Evening,

the forecast for Tomorrows storm remains the same. The National Weather Service has upgraded the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning as "Possibility" for up to 5 inches of snow in these areas remains.

As we progress through the night, a majority of us will remain above the freezing mark. There will be a slight chance for some freezing rain in some higher elevations and isolated areas where colder air is able to stay put. A few on the plateau may see some spotty snowflakes mixing in towards the early morning hours.

Tomorrow, temperatures will rise to the upper 30s for the valley and mid 30s over the plateau while precipitation transitions to mainly rain during the morning. This will quickly transition back to snow for the plateau with all snow expected after 1:00 PM.

We will be looking at 1-3 hours on the plateau for accumulating snowfall, however, the precipitation availability is doubtful to continue far into the overnight hours.

What is left, will fall as snowfall in the valley. As previously, snowfall totals remain in the same general area as I previously expected. The National Weather Service is expecting a higher level of snowfall in the region.

Smokies --- 6-12"
Valley --- Less than 2"
Southern Valley --- Dusting (If anything)
Plateau --- Less than 4"

Temperatures will remain chilly during the morning hours. Expect highs today in the low to mid 40s.

Light to moderate rain showers will be moving from west to east as we progress through to the afternoon and evening as a low pressure system injects some moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. These showers will be spotty at times.

WINTER WEATHER:

I am sticking with the general synopsis of snowfall estimations expected through Monday Morning. Expect minimal amounts (if anything) in the lower valley and up to 2" as you progress through to the upper valley towards the Tri-Cities. The plateau will remain very messy with some areas experiencing minimal snowfall while other areas could receive up to 4 inches.

NOTE: Even if this system were to shift --- OR cold air make it to the valley --- The mountains will block a large portion of our moisture availability. Cold air is locked into the western North Carolina areas and could result in heavy snowfall.

Here is what I will show as a "Realistic" view of potential snowfall accumulations as of Saturday night through Monday morning. I believe we will stay surprisingly dry through the day Sunday as our mountains to the east will block a significant amount of moisture being pulled from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic. This means less rain and less snow.

The plateau areas and mountains will maintain the highest accumulations as previously expected.

For areas shaded in white you can expect to receive less than 2" as the valley as a whole will stay within the dusting to 2" range. Our southern areas such as Athens and Sweetwater will likely see only a wintry mix and maybe a light dusting.

Further to the north and east towards the Tri-Cities, it remains slightly uncertain as to whether these totals are too low. Will update tomorrow!

Have a good night and stay safe

The National Weather Service has issued a "Winter Storm Watch" for our plateau and mountain areas. The outcome for the valley remains uncertain as a warm sector making it's way into the region is possible.

I have updated our snowfall potentials and will be detailing some numbers by this evening for what we can expect to "possibly" see. There is still a lot of uncertainty with this system.

Here is a different look at the snow potential moving into the end of this upcoming weekend.

Unfortunately, this system is still changing multiple times per day. Think of it like a chain reaction on a highway --- one person taps brakes and eventually it spirals backwards. Calculating where the baseball will land on the field is difficult, but sometimes are more difficult than others.

I can say with fairly high confidence that areas of Western North Carolina through Virginia and up the East coast will likely see heavy snowfall. Also, South Carolina and parts of Central North Carolina will have the potential for an icing event. If you plan to travel this weekend into early next week, make sure to check your forecasts.

No need for milk and bread runs in Tennessee --- yet.

Here is a look at our next storm --- There will be a lot to uncover in the coming days. Right now, it looks like the entire region will see precipitation in the way of rain and or snow.

I will continue to update as more details become available.
