Do you always HAVE to be trendy? I say NO! I have always said no - I personally love eclectic decor. I love when someone's personality shines through in their decorating tastes. I encourage my clients to always focus on what they love. That being said, there are some tacky things you may want to avoid OR learn how to present them in a way that isn't, well, yucky. This is a great article I read this morning and wanted to share...ENJOY!

When you're decorating your home, it's important to choose pieces you like; so ignore what society says. Here are 25 home decor trends the masses have declared "tacky;" but we say they're actually, totally fine.

Great article! A must read for anyone looking to update their space. In today's world it may just takes getting rid of all that extra stuff! Enjoy!

As homemakers age, their beautiful homes can fall prey to a handful of decor mistakes that are unique to people over the age of 45. Here are 30 pitfalls that you should avoid to keep your home from screaming "senior."

Lets talk about the elephant in the room...

I'm talking about the literal elephant or elephants - those huge oversized pieces of furniture you have stuffed into your living area.

Good design is all about scale - and most of us live in homes with footprints that cannot support massive couches or chairs. Not only that, overstuffed and oversized was a trend of the late '90s and early '00s.

Crowded rooms create irritation - you have to walk around this or squeeze by that. Your room looks small and uninviting. Nothing fits. You may even start to think "I need a bigger house!"

Luckily that is not usually the case. Scaling back the size of your furniture will fix the problem...but most can't just decide to go and purchase new furniture on a whim...so what to do?

Often just removing just one of those huge pieces will make the room feel larger...it's a start. You may also consider removing extraneous "stuff" from the area...things that clutter up the space. Are you feeling calmer already?

If you are lucky enough to purchase replacement items remember; size does not always equal comfort and less is more. Purchase quality over quantity. You do not have to buy that matching set (that is a topic for another post...more to come on that!)

So take a look at your living space with a fresh eye, remove the elephant and breathe. Happy Sunday!

Happy Friday! We all love the WOW factor but keep this in mind - not every finish, piece of furniture, or accent wall needs to have it. In fact, it often takes away from the overall effect if EVERYTHING is WOW. This is good news for those of us that like to save money but want to have amazing design.

I recently did a beautiful home remodel - a standard stick built late 1960's number. I know you can see it - lots of small rooms, long narrow hallway, tiny kitchen...etc. To bring it into the late '10s walls (lots of them) had to come down, and those of you that know me KNOW I am a huge fan of taking down walls!

With such a large scale remodel saving money where we could was necessary - BUT - I encouraged my Clients to purchase an amazing drum and bubble chandelier (very similar to the picture posted below) to grace their huge dining room table. It was beautiful and really gave their dining area the much needed WOW factor. Yes, it was a bit spendy, but it made everything inexpensive in the room look and feel very high end. Definitely worth the investment!

Lesson of the day - save money where you can and throw in a signature piece or two. You'll be glad you did!

While I do have a website now (geez, I feel so official) I will be posting here regularly with current home design trends, links, and general design/decorating advise. Please like and follow my page!

First tip of the day - if you are doing a remodel/reno/flip to RESELL remember to keep the finishes NEUTRAL! Folks want don't want to walk into a home they are buying and know they are immediately going to have to spend big money to make something work. More to come on that...

Bonus tip of the day - subway tile is your friend - it stands the test of time, will fit in almost all design motifs, and it can be had as low as $2 a square foot!
