Biannual Flight Review ✅
Yesterday was a good day to fly and I’m officially legal for two more years. My CFI’s feedback was “I have absolutely no concerns about you”. I taking flying seriously. On a more comical note, I shot an approach into KGRR while a regional jet was holding short for us. We waved at them as we went by. There’s something deviously satisfying about landing a small airplane on a 10,000 foot runway while jets on a schedule are made to wait for you 😂

Story Time! During my Biannual Flight Review today, we had a great opportunity to get some actual instrument approaches in the clouds. We discussed the weather and low ceilings as well as personal minimums. I performed my normal thorough preflight on the airplane and all checked out. We fueled up and taxied out to the active runway and I did my runup as always. Left mag - Check, Right mag - Super rough engine. Uh oh. I checked the right mag again - same result. I tried to lean it to burn off any fouling but I got the same result. I watched the cylinder temps and saw it drop to 0 on cylinder 2 on the right mag - a sure sign a spark plug isn’t working. I looked at my CFI and said “Well that’s a definite no-go”. He concurred and thanked me for being decisive, saying he would have over ruled me if I decided to go. Who would take that chance!? We were going to be IMC 400’ off the ground! We also noted cylinder #2 was running REALLY hot during taxi back to the hanger. Any ideas on that one?

The lesson: ALWAYS do a proper pre flight and a proper run up. Having a problem in flight is bad enough. Having a problem when you can’t see anything is worse. Fly safe!

Happy everyone! This was an epic flight - shot the gap between two thunderstorms and climbed to 11,000 feet to avoid the build ups in between. Videos to come soon, but needless to say it was absolutely awesome 🤘

Aviators have a different appreciation for clouds. Most people see the beauty of towering clouds, and I do too, but I also see the violence that’s contained within. Maybe it’s that internal violence that enhances their external beauty. Any pilot who has flown into the wrong build up knows all too well how gleefully punching holes in clouds quickly becomes an anxiety laden invisible rollercoaster. Gaining altitude at 500 to 800 feet per minute while pitched 10 degrees nose down is a feeling you don’t soon forget. Neither is the sudden drop that comes when you exit that updraft.

Admire the beauty of the weather. Respect the power it holds. Good pre flight planning and constant in flight weather analysis go a long way. When I’m on the ground I constantly compare what I see against what’s shown on to help me better analyze while in flight. Fly safe friends ✈️

We found the snow! Jets can fly in conditions that would typically result in ice accumulation because the leading edge of the wings, horizontal stabilizer and tail are heated with hot air from the engines. This air, known as “bleed air”, is ducted from the engines to these surfaces to prevent ice from forming. Aviation is cool 😎

I almost had to run up front to tell them I was a pilot! For context, jets have the ability to heat the leading edges of the wings and tail with hot air from the engines known as “bleed air”. Once the leading edges get above freezing by about 10* C the ice begins to shed. In the Great Lakes region, structural icing is incredibly common this time of year. Why get into aviation? There are too many reasons to list, but it depends on what you want to do with it. 1. If you want to make a career out of aviation, you’ll always have a job. Pilots are in high demand right now! 2. There are MANY different jobs you can do in aviation, not all of them are airline pilots! Towing banners, pipeline inspection (I always thought that one would be fun), surveying, skydive pilot, etc. 3. If you want to fly for fun, that’s a great option! The experiences you can have with friends and family are limitless. Flying opens up a whole new world of possibilities. 4. If you travel for your job, you can fly in the course of your employment. This is what I do. I travel for work frequently so I made an arrangement with my employer that allows me to fly to job locations instead of drive. Not only is it faster, but it’s WAY more fun! 5. If the cost of getting into aviation seems too steep, just realize that most of us have been there. There are scholarships and grants you can obtain to assist. There’s also the delayed gratification approach - work hard for a couple years and bank away all you can do you are able to knock out your flight training in one big effort!If you want to fly, don’t give up.
