"Remember that it’s okay to feel what you are feeling. A big part of healing every day is allowing yourself to feel anger, sadness, insecurity, and to name it. When we allow ourselves to feel, when we identify our feelings, something incredible happens: we can move on from them."

Trauma leaves indelible marks on the soul, but as Caroline Beidler, Author and her mother, Diana Dalles, illustrate in their powerful book You Are Not Your Trauma: Uproot Unhealthy Patterns, Heal the Family Tree, those marks don’t have to define us.

Our latest Substack post offers this candid video conversation with Lake Drive Books publisher David Morris where Caroline and Diana explore the depths of trauma, the heights of recovery, and the transformative power of radical honesty and intergenerational healing.

It tells a fascinating story of recovery through reflective retreats, therapy, creative expression, and an extraordinary application of meditation.

What would a healthier spiritual politics look like? How to resist feelings of mutual suspicion and overload—a polarization monetized by algorithms and metabolized by human nervous systems? In such conditions, “a listening heart” (from 1 Kings 3) is hardly fashionable. It never was. These Refl...

“I have a strong commitment to authenticity, so I don’t like to say words that I don’t mean. Even though Christmas carols are powerful and beautiful, there are lyrics I don’t agree with. So it creates a tension.”

So many of us are giving up the god we were raised on, realizing there's goodness to discover if we allow ourselves to seek it.

Satisfyingly written by Sarah Henn Hayward, Giving Up God will take you on a journey of hope, love, and wonder.

While the church seems to be shutting out questions, Giving Up God shows us how to discover who we are beyond religion and find a new path forward.

Equally important to past identities, which helped shape who I am, is the mission to continue growing and building a new life apart from the past. I can be partly defined by life post-faith and post White-centered thinking, but I am, more importantly, defined by the life I choose to live and the people I choose to love and support.

Churches may have good intentions with a rhetoric that says, “Well, everyone is welcome! Come on in! The water’s fine!” As if they’re doing us gay people a favor by at least opening up their doors. Look at them go! They’re so amazing!

But regardless of “good intentions,” this ploy is common and damaging and ultimately not loving. It’s a surprise attack that preys upon the hearts of q***r people who hope against hope that maybe this church is different, that maybe this time they’ll be safe, only to realize they were lied to in hopes to be converted and transformed into the church’s image, rather than their own.
