Grand Prairie Officer Involved Shooting Following Pursuit - Ramming Police Motorcycle

Grand Prairie – Today at approximately 3:00 PM, a Grand Prairie Police Motorcycle Officer, working traffic enforcement in the 3000 block of Corn Valley Road, attempted to stop a Nissan passenger vehicle for excessive speed. The driver fled from the officer and a pursuit ensued. During the course of the pursuit, the driver threw contraband from his vehicle and entered a cul-de-sac in the 2800 block of Springdale Circle. Realizing the street was a dead-end, officers stopped and attempted to verbally command the driver to stop his vehicle. The driver, never stopping, made a U-turn and accelerated his vehicle, ramming the police motorcycle. Just prior to the ramming, the officer, fearing for his life, dismounted his motorcycle and fired a single round through the windshield. The suspect, who sustained a non-life-threatening injury, was treated with first aid by responding officers and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver has been identified as Jose Vega, 25 years of age, of Grand Prairie.

Per departmental policy, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Shooting Team responded to the scene and is conducting an independent investigation. The Grand Prairie Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will be conducting a concurrent administrative investigation.

The officer has been placed on routine administrative leave.

WEST NILE VIRUS POSITIVE MOSQUITO SAMPLES REPORTED-
GRAND PRAIRIE TO GROUND SPRAY THURSDAY AND FRIDAY

GRAND PRAIRIE— The City of Grand Prairie reports two West Nile Virus positive mosquito samples and will ground spray on Thursday, July 8, 2021 and Friday, July 9, 2021 depending on weather conditions, starting at 9 p.m. in two areas:

Area 1 is bound by Nottingham Place on the north, Ravenwood Drive on the east, Postbridge Drive on the south, and Prince John Drive on the west.

Area 2 is bound by Woodford Cove Street and Thousand Oaks Court on the north, Belt Line Road on the east, Shady Grove Road on the south, and Gilbert Road on the west

Residents in these areas are advised to stay indoors, keep pets inside, and cover fish ponds during those times. Spraying will be rescheduled if wind speeds are above 10 mph or in the event of rain. A map of these areas is available at www.gptx.org.

All Grand Prairie residents are asked to help eliminate the areas that mosquitoes need to breed by emptying, removing, or covering any receptacle that can hold water. To prevent mosquito bites, residents are advised to use an insect repellent containing at least 30 percent DEET (lower concentration for children) and stay indoors at dawn and dusk.

The City of Grand Prairie conducts regular tests on mosquito samples throughout the city as part of its West Nile Virus surveillance program. For more information on vector control in Grand Prairie, please visit: www.gptx.org/FighttheBite.
