I’m not saying it’s a bad movie. It’s just not as good as I had hoped and it may have taken the name of the book it is based on but it misses the point of the book that the murders and theft went way beyond the FBI investigation and the characters played by Di Nero and DiCaprio.

I heard NPR do a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation this morning in honor of Juneteenth. That proclamation became law on January 1st 1863, one week after the ex*****on of the Dakota 38 in Mankato, Minnesota. It’s easy to gloss over hard truths and sugar coat American history and its heroes. It’s also easy to narrow the lens of history and to see no broader context to celebrated events, especially when that broader view detracts from these celebratory moments or show the widespread atrocities committed by this country.
While Abraham Lincoln was crafting his Emancipation Proclamation, he was also signing the Ex*****on Order for those wronged by the Homestead Act, another document that bears his signature. So on the day after Christmas in 1862, 38 Dakota were hung in grand fashion on a massive gallows built for this public display. The good people of Mankato came out in droves to witness the spectacle. And just like Lincoln’s address a week later, this too was a celebration, for some. Minnesota’s finest came out in their finest with their families to watch 38 people, whom these folks had been systematically replacing, executed, hanged, murdered all in an instant with a drop of the floor beneath them.
So if Juneteenth calls on some to celebrate, perhaps everyone needs to break down the silos that can allow any events of the racist history of the United States to be celebrated.
