Depicted here by one artist, Queen Vashti was known throughout the ancient world for her beauty - in fact, her very name meant beauty. And yet, her refusal to provocatively display her beauty for the king and his guests was radical in many ways and sent shock waves throughout the court and the kingdom.

Today, as we launch our study in the book of Esther, we use the queen’s radical refusal to talk about a sometimes touchy subject - submission in Christian marriage - but not just that! We look at how God has designed order and peace for each of our relationships!! Believe it or not, we choose submission every day in various other relationships, and there even was submission within the roles of the Trinity despite their perfect equality!

I have seen too many people’s love grow cold once they settle into more comfortable lifestyles and relationships. Sometimes, they walk away from Christ altogether and end up in places they never thought they would be.

Today’s message in Ruth offers GREAT HOPE if you or the people you love find yourself drifting, even a little bit, from that original course you know God has set for you. The call is simple—return. Come home.

Escape it.
Enlist it.

When you face something difficult, you have three options according to Warren Wiersbe. Of course, we should try to enlist our trials to strengthen us and build our characters.

How could one Man be approached so easily by the destitute, sought by the sick, loved by children, and trusted by the marginalized?

One word. Gentleness.

Jesus said it best of Himself:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29).

He described Himself as gentle, and in Philippians 4:5, today we learn that our gentleness, too, should be known to all men because the Lord is at hand.

In today’s episode we also explore some of the most famous passages in Phillippians, including verse 6-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

This is the “neuralyzer,” that object in Men in Black that erased memories. And honestly, for years that’s what I thought Philippians 4:13 meant about forgetting those things which are behind. That once stuff happened, we really needed to move on already. But I am learning something - Paul means rather, do not stay STUCK in anything. God gives us that ability to heal, to LIVE as citizens of heaven. So much beautiful truth today on Rinse and Repeat!!

Groveling.

Running around at the behest of another.

These may be the pictures we have in our heads when we think about humility but it really should NOT BE SO.

Humility is having FULL dependence on God’s mercy, and it has nothing to do with insecurity, or humiliation, as we will learn in today’s episode of Rinse and Repeat. Rather, humility is to have “the mind of Christ” (Philippians 2:5).

Turn to Philippians Chapter 2 as we continue our study in Philippians and explore what it means to have the mind of Christ. We will also explore Philippians 2:9-11, the remarkable passage which says, “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

This week Rinse and Repeat is about what I am living for… and I share moments from my own selfish heart. Oh the moments when I don’t have my coffee “just so!”

Last night a few FC Women gathered in my home to celebrate the end of our spring Bible studies and I was reminded. Worship is a weapon. Jehoshaphat had worship leaders lead the way to victory in 2 Chronicles 20, Joshua did in Joshua 6….

Worship is helping me win the battle within this week. It is reminding me that to LIVE is Christ and to die is gain, which is the message of the program this week.

My dear friend Leslie Worden LeBlanc gave me these flowers to thank me for teaching a class, and they look so bright in my bare kitchen this morning.

Flowers in a kitchen on a morning when even my bones hurt remind me God is near. Worship among God’s people reminds me God is near.

For me, slowly I am learning, to live is Christ, to die is gain.

When one thinks of confidence - one might think of someone standing up straight, tall, and strong.

If one thinks of the sources of confidence, one might think of a person having a great job, or a good education, or a great skill.

But one would never - as in EVER - associate being in prison as a source of confidence.

But that is PRECISELY what the Apostle Paul does. He actually says that he is CONFIDENT in his chains, that they are for the FURTHERANCE OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST!!!

Say what now?

“God if you give me the life of my child, I will serve you all the days of my life.”

We have all seen that scene in the movies - someone is in desperate need, so they begin to negotiate with God.

Or perhaps we have LIVED that scene.

When was the last time we really sought God out of a place of desperation? When did we last pray less like “Now I lay me down to sleep” and more like “Lord, my life hangs in the balance here!”

Today’s lagniappe is about when we are desperate, as in REALLY desperate, and we come running to God in those times of great need. We will look at four main figures of Scripture who faced desperate situations, and what God did in each of those situations.
