The second shooting within 24 hours in two of the city of Goldsboro's more heavily traveled areas left a 21-year-old male shot in the leg Saturday.

Tavion Jones, 21, of Pikeville, was shot in the leg while he was walking through the parking lot at Burger King, at 1807 Wayne Memorial Drive, near Carlie C's IGA, Saturday morning at about 9:30 a.m., said LaToya Henry, Goldsboro public information officer.

Jones was injured and taken by Emergency Medical Services personnel to UNC Health Wayne for treatment. Goldsboro police responded to the scene at 9:49 a.m. and found Jones suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

Jones told police he was walking through the parking lot when he heard a "pop," Henry said. He continued walking toward the restaurant and discovered an injury to his leg where he was shot.

No other injuries were reported and no arrest has been made.

The shooting happened less than 24 hours after a fatal shooting at the Food Lion grocery store, at 1809 E. Ash St.

Javon Langston, 18, of Goldsboro, was killed inside Food Lion at about 1:30 p.m. Friday. The shooting led to the store being closed.

No arrest was made following the Friday shooting and no one else was injured. Police confirmed that Langston knew the shooter and the two got into a verbal altercation.

Police have not confirmed if the shootings are related or if they are gang related.

Mayor Charles Gaylor issued a statement Friday night urging residents to not engage in revenge in response to the shootings.

"What I am here to promise is that we will work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice," Gaylor said. "But we will need the help of the community around us. We need prosecution through the criminal justice system.

"We must resist the urge to bring violence in response to violence. Our community deserves to see true justice."

Gaylor has talked with Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce to request backup assistance and to activate a joint team to respond and investigate the shootings.

"We know that violence, especially gang violence, in Wayne County doesn’t care if it has crossed a border into a city or not," Gaylor said. "We must work together to bring resolution to our citizens, our communities, and our families.

"We simply cannot afford to lose more of our children, neighbors, and friends to these senseless acts of violence."

Teenager fatally shot Friday at Ash Street Food Lion
By News Argus staff

An 18-year-old male was fatally shot Friday afternoon at the Food Lion store on East Ash Street.

LaToya Henry, Goldsboro public information officer, confirmed late Friday that Javon Langston, 18, of Goldsboro, was killed at the store at about 1:30 p.m.

Goldsboro police responded to the shooting at the Food Lion, at 1809 E. Ash St., 1:34 p.m. where they found Langston near the entrance of the store.

Langston was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and police started to administer aid, Henry said.

Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived and pronounced Langston dead at the scene, Henry said.

No arrest has been made.

The Food Lion, located in a heavily traveled area of the city, was closed after the shooting.

Goldsboro police remained at the scene where yellow caution tape surrounded the entire front entrance of the grocery store.

Multiple police cruisers were lined up near the front and side of the store and the front doors were blocked to customers.

By 2:45 p.m., Henry confirmed that the shooting suspect was not in the area.

The Goldsboro Police Department’s Investigative Services Bureau and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene and learned that Langston and another male suspect, who police have not identified, had a "verbal altercation," or verbal argument and fight that can include a threat of violence.

Police did not confirm if the shooting was gang related or if it was connected to a Wednesday shooting on South John Street that resulted in the death of a 21-year-old Dudley man.

Henry also did not confirm if there was a fight that took place in the parking lot after the shooting that involved several people who were gathered around the store.
