I’m an artist of course so I can “draw”, but what makes my art believable is because I have studied human behavior—A LOT. What’s going on right now with toilet paper, sanitizer, and the general scarcity of things, I just don’t understand. Last night David Ropeik explained how us Homo Sapiens are wired. I did this caricature for Dapper Event Design. It feels like yesterday that I drew Alex and Collin (the founders) at their launch party and now that have an amazing team and do events in Arizona and Colorado.

I did the original sketch and was all set to go and then I was asked by my lovely bride to add the bearded dragon. Little add ons like that make these portraits just that much more special. I loved that we added that little guy.

I figured I'd kick off the Halloween season right with caricaturing myself as the Joker. I'm not excited for the Joker movie yet though. Heath Ledger owns that role in my mind. Though DC was smart for taking the Joker out of Su***de Squad.

When i find an author I like I usually immerse myself into their work. I’ve really been info Matt Furey’s work lately and he calls himself Fure Cat a lot. When I first saw him sign his e-mails Fure Cat I though it read FUR cat. I thought, for an an ex wrester and a fitness guy he doesn’t strike me as a cute fluffy little kitty. When i realized he was writing Fure (like his last name) I felt like a bit of a dumb ass. Afterward I think my subconscious turned him into a kickass cat that I had to draw.

I love it when I can do caricatures based on a movie or cartoon theme. When the bride told me Alice in Wonderland was their theme I got excited. I had all these ideas in my mind based on the Disney cartoon but when I started the finished drawing I decided to tone them down. I based the foreground and wardrobe on the cartoon but I painted the background based on the movie. Although the background details are important I wanted the focus to stay in the foreground on the bride and groom.

This past weekend I attended a Caricature workshop with one of my favorite artists, Tom Richmond. Richmond is a world renowned caricature artist but comic kids like me may know him best for his work in Mad Magazine.

I've had a short class here and there with some of my favorite artists. And in the course of an hour or two you generally get a handful of great tips. Richmond's workshop was three full days and I learned SO much. Working at Illumination each night allowed me to apply what I learned immediately so that made it even better. It was an amazing experience. Never stop learning, peeps.

ASU Gold ’N Gavel Caricatures

The theme for the 2018 Gold ’N Gavel Awards was superheroes and I drew the nominee and the nominators. Since I didn’t have to draw specific characters for everyone I approached it like I do my live work and just drew what felt natural for the model. As soon as I saw Ijana, I knew I wanted her to be storm and Bethell was the perfect Colossus. They wouldn’t let me cover him in metal though. :) I also really liked Feeney’s fiery hair with the muted color background. Luckily the Dark Phoenix movie won’t be out for a while.

When I saw Jay’s picture, his scruffy face immediately reminded me of Stephen Amell from Arrow so the choice for them was easy. Plus I like the show. Well, before last season. Did I say that out loud?

Wong and Renaut as Batman literally cracks me up. I was told these two actually refer to themselves as Batman and Robin so I chose to go with Adam West/fun Batman instead of the more serious looks.

I was drawing digital caricatures for the Coyotes yesterday. I was told to bring a jacket just in case. Me? A jacket in August, that's not happenin! Though I didn't necessarily "need" a jacket it did get cold.

One of the staff told me they cranked the A/C down because they were "making the ice" so it was colder than usual. Like hanging meat in a freezer colder than usual... I didn't even know a building that large could get that cold. I was impressed.

The client had a strong vision for this three part caricature. The caricaturee (as you probably imaged) is a huge Batman fan and she based these images off parts of one of the Batman movies. It was fun bringing out his inner superhero (and her inner villain as the Joker). I would have loved to have seen his reaction to all of these.
