Bitlis was a historic Armenian region in Western Armenia, part of the Aghdznik province of Greater Armenia. Stretching from the western shores of Lake Van to the Ta**us and Byurakn mountains and down to the Tigris River, it was once home to a thriving Armenian population.
On the eve of the Armenian Genocide, nearly 200,000 Armenians lived in the province. Only about 56,000 survived the massacres, marking a devastating loss to Armenian history and heritage.
