What's your favorite snare drum depth?

The ideal drum depth is subjective and depends on your personal preferences, playing style, and desired sound. It can also play a significant role in its tonal characteristics, sustain, and playing feel.

Deeper shells typically produce lower-pitched fundamental tones, have a longer sustain, and known to sound fuller, fatter, and boomier.

Shallower shells typically produce higher-pitched fundamental tones, have a shorter sustain, and sound brighter and sharper.

· Poorest performers don’t set goals at all.
· Mediocre performers set goals that are general and are often focused on simply achieving a good outcome.
· Best performers set goals that are not about the outcome but about the process of reaching the outcome.

So, do you just "play"? Or hit the shed with a plan?

Here’s a breakdown:

Bass Drum: The name “four on the floor” comes from playing the bass drum on every quarter note, creating a steady, pulsating heartbeat that lays the foundation for the groove.

Snare Drum: The snare usually adds accents on beats two and four, punctuating the bass drum rhythm and providing a crisp backbeat. This classic “bom-chick” pattern creates a driving momentum that keeps the groove moving.

Overall Feel: The four on the floor groove is about groove and feel rather than complex technicality. It’s all about maintaining a steady tempo, emphasizing the beat, and playing with dynamics and ghost notes to add subtle variations and keep the groove interesting.

Tension Rods!

𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘...the most common tension rod thread is 12-24? For the most part you can mix and match different manufacturer’s rods. But not all tension rods are the same...

Be aware that other threads do exist. 10-24 was used by Leedy until the 1930s and 1/4-20 has been used by Sonor and other MIJ Drums. Always check that you are using the correct size and thread count before forcing them into the swivel nut.

𝑫𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒍𝒖𝒃𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒔? I prefer White Lithium Grease when adding lubricant to the rods. Every time I change the heads I take a minute to make sure there is at least a little lubricant on each.

Which Acrolite would you choose?

The Ludwig Acrolite is a popular snare drum that has been in production since the early 1960s. It is known for its bright, dry sound and its durability. The Acrolite is made with a single-ply aluminum shell and features classic Ludwig hardware.

Extraneous hardware rattles? This has been a known fix for a very long time. Most often found inside drum lugs, people have been using cotton balls to dampen hardware rattles inside lugs, bass drum springs, or even other parts.

5:3 Polyrhythm (Quintuplet Subdivision)

Do you practice polyrhythms?

A polyrhythm is the simultaneous use of two or more rhythms happening at the same time. A great way to improve your sense of rhythm and time is to practice polyrhythms and rhythmic independence exercises.

Have you heard of Zildjian’s discontinued Remix cymbals? The ultra-hip Re-Mix line was developed in conjuction with drum ‘n’ bass specialist Zach Danziger.

What is your favorite bass drum pedal?👇

Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing your next pedal:

𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭: Bass drum pedals drastically range in price.

𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦: There are three main types of drive systems: chain, belt, and direct drive. 𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆-𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒏 pedals are usually the lightest and cheapest. 𝑫𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒆-𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒏 pedals are stronger and more powerful and a good option for most drummers. 𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒕 𝒑𝒆𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒔 are typically more durable and responsive. 𝑫𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕-𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆 pedals are usually most expensive, but they offer the fastest and most responsive action.

𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The action of the pedal refers to how smoothly and easily it moves. A smooth action is important for playing fast passages, while a heavier action can be better for playing with more power.

Setting SMART practice goals is an important part of improving your performance.

Do you make SMART practice goals?👇

SMART goals are goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. They are a popular goal-setting framework because they help you set goals that are more likely to be achieved.

𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜: Your goal should be clear and unambiguous. What exactly do you want to achieve?

𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Your goal should be quantifiable. How will you know when you have achieved your goal?

𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Your goal should be realistic and attainable. If your goal is too difficult, you're less likely to achieve it.

𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭: Your goal should be important to you and your overall goals. If your goal is not relevant, you're less likely to be motivated to achieve it.

Donner Kit Comparison:

I've been able to demo both of these e-kits! The Donner DED-80 and DED-200 are both affordable electronic drum kits that provide a variety of useful options and are fun to play! I am impressed at the number of features Donner has included in their line of electronic drumsets.

How do you decide which electronic kit is best for you? 👇

The DED-80 is a smaller kit with some nice starting features. It includes a snare drum pad, 3 tom pads, a crash cymbal, ride cymbal, and hi-hat pads, and kick and hi-hat trigger pedals. The DED-80 also has a built-in metronome and a variety of drum sounds. The smaller size makes it a great fit for even the youngest drummers!

The DED-200 is slightly larger and includes even more features. It has a snare drum pad (with rim trigger), 3 toms, two crash cymbals, a crash/ride cymbal, and hi-hat pad. The upgraded cymbal angle adjustments help with custom cymbal positioning. The Donner DED-80 and DED-200 are both affordable electronic drum kits that provide a variety of useful options and are fun to play!

The DED-80 is a smaller kit with some nice starting features. The 7" drum pads are all mesh, which provides a more realistic feel than traditional rubber pads. The DED-80 also has a built-in metronome and a variety of drum sounds that can be played back through headphones or an external speaker. The smaller size makes it a great fit for even the youngest drummers.

The DED-200 is slightly larger and includes even more features. The upgraded cymbal angle adjustments help with custom cymbal positioning. The drum pads are all mesh and the kick drum is a rubber pad for bass drum feel rebound. Rogers Holiday drums

What do you think of vintage Rogers drums?...

The Rogers Holiday drum set was introduced in 1960 and was produced until 1967. It was a popular choice for professional drummers of the era, and is still sought-after by collectors today. The Holiday set was known for its sound, which was due in part to the use of maple shells and reinforcement rings. The drums were also equipped with Rogers’ signature Beavertail lugs, which are known for their durability and smooth action.

The Holiday set was available in a variety of finishes, including sparkle, pearl, and solid colors. It was offered in a variety of configurations, from a basic 3-piece set to a more elaborate 5-piece set. The Holiday set was available in a variety of sizes, to accommodate drummers of all sizes.

𝐀𝐬 𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬, there are many different ways to use dynamics. Take some time and 𝑳𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏 to how dynamics can help connect different sections of a song 🎧

Some common dynamic markings include:
Piano (p) - Soft
Mezzo-piano (mp) - Medium soft
Mezzo-forte (mf) - Medium loud

Tying a Cymbal Knot...

Cymbal knots are most commonly used for suspended cymbals or orchestral/marching crash cymbals. Sometimes in recordings if I want a pure suspended cymbal roll without losing vibration from the stand a will create a suspended cymbal with a cymbal knot and use a suspended cymbal stand.

The provided pictures and below instructions can be found in my book, "The Total Percussionist: A Quick Access Guide to Performance Techniques" available on Amazon.

1. Insert the strap through the bell of the cymbal and separate the four ends.
2. Cross strap A over strap B.
3. Cross strap B over strap A and over strap C.
4. Cross strap C over strap B and over strap D.
5. Cross strap D over strap C and through the loop in strap A. Pull the straps tight from all sides.
