New Mexico - The Albuquerque Police (APD) released the video of an officer-involved incident that took place in late September. When officers arrived at the apartment, they discovered a man attacking a woman with a hammer and opened fire to stop him.
The man police interacted with was the person who originally called them to the Valle De Atrisco apartments across from Atrisco Heritage High. Brian Womack, 42, originally called, saying a woman was trying to break into his apartment. Officers tried to enter, but Womack and a woman inside would not let them in. Officers left and came back when Womack called them again, but Womack still would not open the door.
Dispatch got a third call from the apartment, and the woman inside could be heard yelling. Officers kicked in the door and saw the woman on the floor, and Womack hitting her with a hammer. One officer opened fire, hitting Womack just a few times.ππ
βMr. Womack sustained 6 wounds to his chest, arms, and back. Medical aid was rendered, but he was pronounced D.R.T.,β said Deputy Commander Robert Drager.
The door was barricaded with a fridge when officers kicked it in. Police say the woman was a friend of Womackβs, and she was scared he was going to kill her. She sustained injuries to her head, hand, and back. Womack has a history of run-ins with police, with a mere 32 Interactions since 2013.
The officer who ended Womack has been with the department since 2023. This is his first officer-involved incident. Solid work here for sure!
