Like anything in life, podcasting is a roller coaster of highs and lows. So when you find yourself in a low (or even in the neutral zone!), here are some tips to keep podcasting fun and interesting.

- Identify your DREAM podcast guests - think BIG, who would you absolutely LOVE to interview?

- Create a fun recording environment - get something decorative with your podcast name or logo on it, upgrade your microphone and/or headphones, decorate your space, and clean up so that sitting down at your desk or in your studio feels cool and fun

- Prepare yourself mentally - what helps you get your adrenaline up? Is there a song or a playlist that makes you feel PUMPED UP? Does it help if you run a quick lap or jump on a trampoline? Have a dance party? Take a shot of your favorite liquor? What kicks your brain into high gear that this is FUN time?

- Re-read your best reviews and DMs from listeners (bonus suggestion: screenshot and save the best ones in an easily accessible folder for the moments you need a dose of inspiration!)

- Re-define your ideal audience, your goals for your audience, and your goals for yourself

Remember when you first started your podcast, and it was such a new and interesting project? It was exciting and fun. You were motivated, inspired, and eager.

But at some point along the way, it kind of became a lot of work, didn’t it? Stuck on the content treadmill, finding yourself in that same situation each week thinking, “Oh crap, I need to record a podcast episode.”

Did you know that 50% of podcasters actually quit between episodes 7 and 11? That’s because podfade is SO normal. Podfade is when the novelty of podcasting wears off and motivation and inspiration fade. Podfade is a sign you may be making your podcast harder than it needs to be, taking it too seriously, and/or comparing yourself to others.

Podcasting should be FUN. That’s where it started, right? So here are some tips to make podcasting fun again.

1. Pick a topic you love, and talk to your DREAM guests. If you’re talking about something you love talking about to people you are dying to have conversations with, it will make your podcast SO much more fun.

2. Have a content plan and strategy. Get off that weekly treadmill. You need a bottomless bucket to pull ideas from and a sustainable recording schedule that will keep you ahead.

3. Set goals for your podcast… and track them. You literally can’t get a return on your investment if you don’t even know what you want to get out of it.

4. Identify your pain points and take action on the things that will actually move the needle forward in your podcast.

Telling stories has been a quintessential part of human communication for thousands of years. Stories ignite the imaginations of your listeners and impact their emotions, encourage them to accept and embrace ideas, inspire them to take action, and bring people together.

Stories that stand the test of time do so because they connect with people. Our brain literally receives different stimuli when it learns information through stories, because stories connect with our emotional side.

This is especially effective for podcasters, because stories humanize us. I talk all the time about how strategic podcasts mimic the intimacy of a phone call. What better way to create that level of intimacy with your listeners than through the art of storytelling?

The next time you share a story on your podcast, don’t forget what makes your voice unique. Tell a story in a way that only you could tell it, that would sound strange coming from anyone else. Build your story around an idea that your audience will remember for awhile. Don’t overcomplicate it: keep it as simple as possible and don’t take detours. And don’t forget a strong call to action! Do you want your listeners to share your podcast, sign up for something, subscribe or follow the show, take a course, or buy a product? The possibilities are endless with a good story.

Podcasting takes work. It’s time-consuming and energy-consuming to plan ongoing weekly content, to set time aside to record, and then to get it edited and posted...? Let alone the marketing! It’s a LOT for one person to do - or, if you have a great team behind you, it can get expensive!

And over time, you might find yourself starting to wonder. Is this what you thought it was going to be? How many people listening is “normal?” What do other people get? How fast should this be growing? How do you grow faster? Does anyone even care what you have to say, besides your friends and family? Are you running out of ideas for content?
