***UPDATE*** Saturday night before being optioned back to AA Alotoona, Drew Maggi went 2-for-2 as a pinch hitter with a double, an RBI and a run scored. That gives him a .333 batting average this week. If he never gets called back up, the “kid” knows he can play in the big leagues.

Very long for me, but I hope you find four minutes to read it.

Thank you, Pittsburgh Pirates. Allow me to be a baseball fan for a moment. Since 6-years-old, I have been baseball first. I love football. I watch soccer. Olympics are must see for me. But baseball has my heart.

And a night like last night for Drew Maggi is just another reason why. Most of you don't know I started decades ago by doing college and minor league baseball play-by-play. MLB play-by-play was my dream job. I've seen these minor leaguers' dreams never be realized. To watch Drew, from afar, kill it in spring training and be sent to Altoona broke my heart. 33-years-old, nearly 4500 minor league plate appearances, three days up with the Twins in 2021 - but only to watch - never to play, chasing the dream, not giving up, in the starting line-up in the minors a bit less as he gets "older", called up Sunday - but again - just to watch Sunday and Tuesday - THEN....last night.

If he never gets another AB in "The Show" it doesn't matter. He is now a major leaguer. In a way, it was almost a Mudville Nine moment. Might Casey did end up striking out (although the nine had the game well in hand). But on the way to the strikeout, Casey was announced to be pinch hitting for one of our city's biggest stars. The umpire stepped away to allow this cup of coffee to become an overflow of emotion in the ballpark from a crowd standing on it's feet, realizing the gravity of this singular moment in time for someone many of them had never heard of before this past weekend. And before he struck out...he ripped the first 94-mph inside pitch he saw foul down into the left field seats. You don't think that was the best hand sting of his life?

Drew Maggi, major league baseball player.

So, much of baseball is a reflection of life. It's grown-ups playing a child's game. It's a 33-year-old man loving what he does every day (for very little pay, mind you, in the minors) and continuing to hope. It's never giving up on that dream despite being told over and over and over again it won't happen. It's facing a problem every time you step to the plate and trying solve it. Sometimes you figure it out. Sometimes you have try again.

It's not an action-packed sport like football or hockey or even basketball. I get that. But it's a beautiful sport, and I'm proud to say I love her.

I think these last few days moved me for many, many reasons I can get into later, but it did make me dream again...even if for only a moment...maybe I can still get my one Major League Baseball play-by-play at bat.

Today we pause and remember J.R. Richard.

I saw him pitch at my first MLB game in 1979. I was in awe, amazed, and delighted when 100mph was put up on the board.

Thank you Mr. Richard for sharing your gift! Rest in Peace.
