WATER CHECK: While we haven't seen rain we are still dealing with an impressive snow pack across the region. As we warm up each day, snow continues to melt and that water works towards our creeks and streams. We've seen these rise and fall as a result. Dry Fork & the Clinch River rose yesterday to action stage then fell again last night. Bluestone at Spanishburg, a known problem area, is following that pattern nearing minor flood stage yesterday but falling this morning. So as we warm up again today, keep a close eye on those smaller waterways, ditches, culverts, and mountain runoff places as they struggle under all this snowmelt.

Our larger rivers like the New River, the Greenbrier River, the Kanawha River have done the same but not as drastically so, today at least, no issue is expected from them. That, of course, changes this weekend. www.wvnstv.com/weather

GOOD MORNING: Happy Valentine's Day! It's a cold morning with colder wind chills and a few flurries. Not a huge warm up expected as temps struggle into the mid and upper 30s this afternoon. It is warm enough to melt away the snowmelt icy spots on the roads for this afternoon. The good news is we won't see any rain today to continue to help give us some breathing room for the flood concerns this weekend.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Our first round of rain will arrive on Saturday morning thanks to a warm front. Temps will be cold enough to see instances of freezing rain, especially across the eastern mountains. As temps warm up, steady to heavy rain along the front will be a good bet into the afternoon. Our second round of rain will arrive on Sunday as a cold front moves through.

Our upcoming rain, combined with our additional snow melt that we will see, will keep the threat for flooding high this weekend. This doesn't discount our gusty winds Saturday and Sunday, which poses a concern to fallen trees and power issues with our already saturated grounds. Be prepared, plan, and please stay this weekend. CHILLY START: If you are heading out the door to either go to school or work, a jacket would certainly help! Temps will be down in the teens in the lowlands with wind chills in just the single digits. The high country in the eastern mountains will feel like they are in the negatives!

Any snow melt from today will refreeze on the roads, causing issues with black ice on any untreated roads. Road temps will warm up above freezing for the lowlands by 9/10 AM with the high country taking a little longer closer to Noon. We will enjoy a dry Valentine's Day before heavy rain arrives this weekend. EVENING PLANS: Prepare for temps to tumble tonight as colder air rushes in - overnight lows for the lowlands will be in the teens with the high country in the eastern mountains down in the single digits. If you count in the winds, wind chills will be down in the negatives for the high country.

Upslope snow showers will persist across the eastern mountains but it won't amount to much - a trace to an inch at best. With roads temps also plummeting, watch for black ice tonight from any snow that melted this afternoon. We have more on your forecast here: www.wvnstv.com/weather

FIRST LOOK (long post): As we get closer to Saturday & Sunday, forecast data become more available and finer tuned. This is to say, each day closer to the weekend, we get a clearer picture of the issues we'll have this weekend into Monday. As such, numbers will likely update. The overall message does not change. A lot of water is coming our way and flood risks still remain high. Plan now for flooding this weekend.

First forecast call for The Greenbrier River at Alderson shows a crest of 15.5 feet early Monday morning. The National Weather Service, unfortunately, does not have forecast capability for all rivers, with Alderson being one of the few on the Greenbrier that does.

This isn't set in stone but it gives an idea of what to expect. Do not rely on this information for final decisions on what to do, only use it as a guide. Remember, last Friday's flooding issues that shut down Route 3 and county route 12/3 in this area had the Greenbrier at Alderson cresting at 13 feet and it crested over 15 feet. River forecasts are guides, not gospels.

Rainfall rates with todays model runs have lowered slightly as our warm front drifts north but placement is going to be key.
Remember, we still have A LOT of snow on the ground which will impact actual rainfall totals too.

That being said, it's a nice improvement but not nearly enough to end our flood threat. If the Greenbrier is one river of concern already, imagine what the smaller creeks and streams will look like. All areas should be concerned with flooding this weekend and special care taken. Stay with the latest on the forecast, as always, with us: www.wvnstv.com/weather

RIVER UPDATE: Rain from yesterday and continued snowmelt will filter towards the creeks & streams today. They filter into the rivers eventually. For now, the Dry Fork at Bradshaw and the Clinch River near Richlands has reached "Action Stage". A point at which the river rises to it's banks but has not reached flood stage. Flood stages are "minor", "moderate", or "major" where flooding is expected to be occurring is already is.

The Clinch River and Dry Fork are rising, but slowly. Without the rain today or tomorrow, we'll see these location run high, but steady once they crest this afternoon. www.wvnstv.com/weather

WINDY: With our cold front moving across the region, colder air is waiting to rush in. Winds are picking up 15-20mph with gusts as high as 30mph at times. For the ridgelines, 30-40mph winds gusts are possible at times. Northwestern Pocahontas County with wind advisories beginning at 11am, 35-50mph gusts are possible.

All this wind will drop temps like a rock throughout the day with wind chills falling even faster. We'll feel like we're in the 20s by mid-afternoon! www.wvnstv.com/weather

GOOD MORNING: Some small improvements for Thursday as our Winter Storm Warnings expire early. Still a few rain showers this morning as a cold front works through. Wind will be elevated 15-20mph with gusts pushing 30mph at times. And we'll be getting colder as the day goes. Morning temps in the 40s with afternoon temps in the mid 30s. We'll be in the teens tonight.

The big headline is the weekend flooding but before we get there, use the "quiet-er time" today and tomorrow to prepare. Find the latest details: www.wvnstv.com/weather

WET AGAIN: After a hiatus of rain and freezing rain for a couple of hours this evening, the steady rain is now moving back into the picture. We'll be watching closely tonight for the potential for high water spots where the steadier rains fall. We are also watching our southeastern counties and our mountainous spots in Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties for more freezing rain over the next couple of hours. Eventually, everyone will warm up above freezing shortly after midnight to where we all see a cold rain, which will be steady at times.

MORE RAIN/FREEZING RAIN: We are seeing a bit of a lull in activity this evening but more rain and freezing rain will return later tonight, which could cause locally heavy rain, as well as freezing rain for our eastern counties, especially in the high-terrain in Pocahontas and Greenbrier counties.

ONE MORE THING: Seems to be our theme the last several days, but there is something else to keep in mind heading into this afternoon and evening.

Ice on trees plus stronger winds make for a terrible set up. Large tree branches can break trying to support themselves and the ice. This often leads to power outages, debris in roads, and in some cases property damage. Keep an eye on the overhead trees, especially in the mountains.

Strong winds can cause control issues while driving, especially the bigger your vehicle is. Add in icy roads it doesn't always have to take much to push you off the road.

The winds will be an underlying but constant issue from now through the weekend. www.wvnstv.com/weather

MORE TO COME: A new area of low pressure in Arkansas is racing towards our region and picking up quite a bit of moisture with it. We'll see showers return by mid-day. Locally, cold air has resettled into the mountains creating the right conditions for freezing rain causing concern for power outages.

Factoring in the impressive amounts of snow on the ground, already saturated grounds, struggling streams and creeks, and and inch of rain possible, flooding concerns rise. Street flooding from blocked storm drains and creeks/streams rising, today isn't without its risks. Plan ahead and stay .

We breakdown what to expect today and the rest of the soggy week here: https://www.wvnstv.com/weather/flood-risks-rising-with-another-round-of-rain-and-ice-wednesday-into-thursday/
