Growth in pottery, especially throwing, happens when you are able to tell the clay exactly what shape you want it to be.
As the daughter of a master potter and a professional potter myself, one of my favorite ways to refine my skills is by “copying” my mom Cathleen’s mug designs. While I have my own unique styles that I love to create, it’s essential to step beyond my usual preferences. “Letting the clay decide what it wants to be” may be fun, but that is not where true improvement occurs.
