Who doesn’t love a daily double?? Club members and .swartz__ hit the Guad this past Saturday. Joan and Cameron managed to double up on a nice pair of rainbows (one on a streamer, the other on tenkara). Jared decided he needed to one up the double, and landed a stud rainbow.

It’s cold here in Texas; but, it’s also time for the SGFF monthly meeting!!!!

This month’s guest speaker is Blake Helman. Blake is a Texas native who waved goodbye to the lone-star state and corporate consulting to pursue his passion for fly fishing in northern New Mexico. Blake finds joy in curating adventures that leave a lasting mark. Specializing in both wade and float fishing, he prides himself on being patient and adaptable in all fishing conditions, and curating the right day for newbies to seasoned fishing veterans.

The topic — The mighty Rio Grande of New Mexico:
A conversation on access, timing, techniques, and conservation.

In this presentation and discussion, Blake Helman, a wade and float guide at Taos Fly Shop as well as a conservation consultant based in Taos, New Mexico, will dive into some of the finer and often not discussed points of one of the West’s trickiest and most rewarding rivers, the mighty Rio Grande. He’ll cover various important considerations when planning a trip. Additionally, Blake will touch on a few other elements critical for successful days on the water. Lastly, he’ll cover a few of the conservation challenges facing the river and its tributaries and the opportunities you have to be involved.

This is sure to be an informative presentation. Brave the cold and come join us for our monthly meeting!

Doors open at 6:30pm, meeting starts at 7.

This month’s speaker, Aquatic Education Specialist Keira Quam, will talk about her work with Texas Parks and Wildlife and how our members can get involved in the TPWD Angler Education program.

Keira was born in California where she developed a love for the outdoors through vacations with her family on the water, fishing, skiing, and camping and as a Camp Fire Girl and BSA Explorer Scout. After relocating to Texas during high school and earning her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University, she went on to teach science and reading to students from elementary to college.

As an adult she volunteered for the Boy Scouts as a Scout Leader, Venturing Crew Advisor, and Wood Badge and Powderhorn Trainer. She worked with the Dallas Safari Club and developed an elective called “Outdoor Education,” which touched the lives of many and earned her awards as District Teacher of the Year, Dallas Safari Club Outdoor Educator of the Year, Dare Officer Teacher of the Year and Texas Outdoor Education Association’s Outdoor Education Program of the Year. She taught students to love and respect the outdoors through fishing, camping, cooking, shooting archery, rifles and shotguns, navigating using maps, compasses and GPS, canoeing and back packing using Leave No Trace principles.

In January of 2013, Keira transitioned to Texas Parks and Wildlife where she now educates adults on how to instill in others the same principles and passion she shares for fishing and the responsibility of caring for our land and water.

This month’s speaker is the club’s very own Brian Carr.

Brian will share with us about Fly Fishing in Virginia, as well as about his new role as the South-Central (Texas) Regional Coordinator for Project Healing Waters.

Brian grew up in the Shenandoah Valley and spent most of his youth fishing the Shenandoah River and its tributaries. After high school, he joined the Navy and was stationed all over the world. The Navy took him to Maryland, North Carolina, California, Virginia, West Virginia, Maine, Florida, Hawaii, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

In 2014, Brian started working and guiding with Project Healing Waters. He has attended the Back Creek Guide School and the Main Guide School, was the PHW New England Casting Champion, and finished first at the Mossy Creek Invitational. During COVID-19 Brian went back to school and received his MBA from Wallace Boston School of Business.

In 2023, Brian retired from the Navy and moved to Georgetown, Texas, with his wife, Crystal and his son, Jameson. Brian has continued to guide and work with Project Healing Waters since 2014 and was recently appointed to the South-Central Regional Coordinator (Texas).
