SGFF has a busy week (mostly keeps us out of trouble, mostly). Our Spring Classic golf tournament is Monday, our silent auction is in full swing, we’ve got a super cool and very exclusive outing on Sunday, AND….

We’ve got a club meeting on Tuesday!!!!

Join us Tuesday, April 15th

This month, our guest speaker is Zack Harris.

Zack joins us this month to discuss locating, approaching, and catching common carp in the Texas hill country. His presentation will review fly selection (including important design features), necessary equipment, carps’ preferred environments, finding the right fish, and presenting your fly to lock in an eat.

Harris is a native Texan, born and raised in San Antonio. He’s been fly fishing and tying flies for the last decade, with a passion for chasing common carp all over the Texas hill country.

In his words, “the world of fly fishing has introduced me to some of the most important people in my life, and it’s shown me some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. Fishing and tying are a few of the things I do that completely separate me from reality. Everything can be going wrong, but when I pick up a fly rod or spin those first few wraps of thread, I forget about it all.”

SGFF is very fortunate to have so many wonderful friends in the fly fishing guide community. Several have recently donated their time and trips to help us raise money for the many wonderful organizations we support…I promise this is the last one, at least for today!!!

This one is huge. My friend and amazing guide Jeremy Inman has donated a half day guided trip….in Hawaii (you have to get yourself there and get your own lodging but I’m here to tell you, fishing for bonefish in Hawaii is not to be missed!!)

Experience the breath-taking beauty of Hawaii as you sight fish for trophy bonefish on the flats of Oahu island! Capt. Jeremy Inman specializes in sight fishing for bonefish of all sizes, ranging from 1-15+ pounds with the average bonefish being between 4-6 pounds. Most days will give you multiple shots at fish well into double digits. The flats on Oahu are often the most challenging and rewarding shallow water fly fishing you can do!

In a personal note, I fished with Jeremy a few years ago and it was a truly unforgettable experience. This is a magical place and the fish FIGHT! Jeremy is a stand up guy and even drove me to the tow lot when my rental car was towed🤦🏻 but who needs a car when you’re fishing

The third Tuesday of the month is right around the corner…time for another SGFF monthly meeting!!!

This month’s guest speaker is Addison Rhudy of

Addison will speak about the diversity of Texas’ Matagorda Bay and how to unlock the timing of the fall bite.

Addison grew up in Houston learning the Texas way of wade fishing for trout and reds, but had a dream to one day become a fishing charter captain. While in college at Texas A&M Kingsville, his passion grew as he waded Baffin Bay for
trophy trout and the crystal-clear flats of Port Aransas for shallow water reds. After settling down with his wife and starting a family in Houston, he discovered the joy of sight fishing with a fly rod for redfish in shallow water, igniting his passion even further. While working a full-time corporate job in Oil & Gas, Addison spent as much time as possible fishing the Matagorda area. but eventually a change was coming. Getting his captain’s license opened the door for him to start running trips and pursuing his lifelong passion.

This year Addison is entering his 5th season of guiding full-time in the Matagorda area. Guiding is his passion project, because he truly enjoys showing people the sport of saltwater fly fishing. There is nothing like the sight of a redfish tailing on a flat, or a big school of hungry reds working down a grass line. Matagorda truly offers everything for the fly fisherman, it has grass flats with crystal clear water, and vast marsh expanses that you can get lost in while chasing redfish.

SGFF February Meeting Announcement!!

I hear you saying, “why is SGFF posing a pic of a bowl of chili?” And scratching your head. Well it’s been cold, and it’s going to get colder next week, so we@are having a chili night! So pull up a chair, grab a bowl and hang out with us on Tuesday night. Special thanks to Craig Hunter for preparing and bring his amazing chili again this year.

As an added bonus, and very fitting given the low on Wednesday is supposed to be 16°🥶🥶, will be talking about cold weather prep.

AJ grew up in Northern Upstate NY at the foothills of the Adirondack mountains where he learned to fish for trout in the spring and hunt for big deer through the fall and winter.  He moved to Texas in 1996 and after a long reprieve rediscovered his love of fishing. A certified Texas paramedic, he spent more than ten years as a civilian flight paramedic completing 1500 patient flights. Currently AJ works for the Georgetown Fire Department as a Firefighter Paramedic.

Certified in Wilderness first aid, AJ started running fire and EMS in Northern Upstate NY years ago and learned quickly how unforgiving cold weather and temperatures can be on the human body.

Texan often downplay the effects of cold weather, because they associate hypothermia with below zero temperatures. However, hypothermia can and does occur in moderate temperate climates and can cause a myriad of complications.  In his presentation AJ will cover what hypothermia is, how to identify the signs and symptoms, and how to treat and prevent hypothermia.

Join us on Tuesday, February 18
