“Gratitude: The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” — Oxford Dictionary

Every morning while drinking my cup of tea I read from a booklet that contains daily meditations, inspirational tips and advice for living in a world where we are often bombarded with messages of doom and gloom. At the beginning of each issue there’s an essay that’s connected to the monthly theme, written by a spiritual guide, therapist or religious leader. This month, as is fitting as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, the theme is gratitude.

"At Least the Turkeys Liked Us!"

On the record warmth of election day, my friend Gary and I headed southeast of Canandaigua to see what we could find to photograph. We went a bit out of our way to stop at the Hopewell Market to try the pastries that a Parisian acquaintance (yes, we know a Parisian) had raved about. Who would have thought a sophisticated lady from Paris would get excited about a Hopewell gas station bakery? She recommended the croissants, but we went for an apple strudel and turnover baked on site: deliciously flaky.

The leaves have turned, and walking through the village, our feet trample upon a carpet of those that have fallen, a disordered pattern of vivid colors. Stacks of pumpkins: pale green, yellow, orange, and white are artfully arranged on steps leading up to front porches or peek out from fading flower beds. Wreaths trimmed with small autumn-hued gourds, slender wheat stalks and delicate twigs adorn doors, some homemade; others purchased at local craft shows or garden centers. The smell of cinnamon and cloves wafts from scented pinecones filling wicker or galvanized metal baskets.

Story and photos by Derek Doeffinger

Shortly after cleaning and refilling our bird bath, a crow landed just above it in the front yard crab apple tree. It surveyed the area and then began cawing.

Although I had no idea what it was saying, I was hoping to figure it out. I couldn’t see any other crows in the area but for five minutes it repeatedly called out. Then far down the street two crows appeared and flew in to join it. Now three crows sat on the branch above the bird bath, looking down at the bath and back at each other.

What was going on here? I have some experience with crows, having befriended a few one winter with leftover doughnut bits. One, I called Gary because he reminded me of a friend who when it came to achieving food goals was an idiot savant. So was Gary the crow.

Watercolorist Laurence E. Keefe will be featured at Pittsford Fine Art on Friday, September 6. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m.
Keefe is known for his vivid, strongly realistic watercolors. His subject matter is primarily landscape and sailing paintings set in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region and the Rochester urban area. “Strong paintings result from a trained eye and an intense gaze,” states Keefe.

Hitting the Road, Seeing the Sights
I love to explore. It’s been hardwired into me since infancy, when my family and I went on a camping trip to Maine, and I was less than a month old. That may sound a little far-fetched for some parents, but I am the youngest of nine children and I think my experienced parents had raising kids down to a science. Welcome to Our Wine Cellar

By Karen Shughart

To celebrate my birthday this month, my husband took me to lunch at a delightful restaurant/winery with a gorgeous view of Seneca Lake. The restaurant’s impressive wine list includes not only their wines but also others from the Finger Lakes and throughout the United States and Europe.
