This item is on the Fillmore county boards agenda today. The supervisors have met with Sheriff Steve Roemmich in executive session several times in the past few months. The county’s legal counsel attended the last executive session. A main stay in the FCSO, Roemmich has been a deputy and chief deputy in the department for several decades serving under former Sheriff Burgess. He inherited a somewhat difficult department after some turmoil after Burgess’ retirement and was elected sheriff in 2022

Wind, rain and mostly hail flattened a good portion of Fillmore County crop ground last night. The epicenter of the major crop loss appears to be Shickley road and Highway 41. Many fields appear to be total losses

Monday night was a long one for John Lowe and his wife. Around 10 pm, straight line winds wrecked havoc on the Lowe farmstead, about 3 miles north of Fairmont, leveling and blowing a wooden barn toward US Highway 81, smashing other outbuildings and ultimately knocking out power. “The wind came up and we heard a bang,” said Lowe Tuesday morning. “It scared the hoolie out of us.” Two Perennial crews were on scene Tuesday and power was restored around noon. Lowe said the area received between 2.5 and 3 inches of rain overnight. He didn’t see any hail. Just lots and lots of wind. He has lived on the farm yard since 1949. There have been several storms over the years including a bin being blown across the highway and several out buildings being destroyed and shingles blown off the house when the same tornado went through PJ O’Conner’s farmyard to the west. The couples vehicles were safe inside an unattached garage. A lineman at the scene said the Lowe farmyard, located at the southwest corner of County Road B and Highway 81, was the only customer Perennial had with power out. “I sure appreciate those Perennial guys,” Lowe said. A house just south of the farmyard never lost power.
