Via MSPs 7th District: OTSEGO COUNTY, MI. Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Ga***rd Post were called to investigate two persons squatting in a cabin located in Otsego County in June 2024. Troopers spoke with the occupants and confirmed they did not have permission to be there. The man, identified as 74-year-old John Dominick Bromley, and his wife, a 68-year-old woman, were homeless and had been living in the cottage without permission.

While talking with the wife, troopers noticed she had extensive bruising and difficulty breathing. An ambulance was called, and she was transported by EMS to Otsego Memorial Hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. While at the hospital, the wife disclosed a history of domestic abuse to troopers from the MSP Traverse City Post.

The woman passed away a few days after being admitted to the hospital. The suspect, Bromley, attempted to gain access to the morgue after his wife’s death by impersonating a trooper. He was not allowed access. A lengthy investigation followed, and an autopsy was performed.

The completed report was turned over to the Otsego County Prosecutor’s Office and an arrest warrant was issued last month. The outstanding warrant was entered in the Law Enforcement Information Network and Bromley was arrested during a traffic stop for speeding in Oakland County. He was brought back to Otsego County and lodged in the Otsego County Jail on February 9, 2025.

Bromley was arraigned this week in the 87-A District Court in Otsego County on one count Aggravated Domestic Violence and First Degree Vulnerable Adult Abuse. He remains lodged on a $50,000 cash surety bond. He is also facing additional charges in Grand Traverse County for impersonating an officer.

My name is Matt as well as assisting and running our scanner page I'm also on a few other Boards in town to help make a positive impact with our county, and I'm also one of the Board of Directors with the Refuge in Otsego County. The Refuge, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, provides shelter to the homeless in Otsego County. It does so by using hotel rooms until clients can find more permanent housing. It also helps clients to find access to food and other basic services. It has provided over 5500 nights of shelter to more than 500 people.
The Refuge was established in 2013 in response to the closing of Otsego County’s only homeless shelter - Friendship Housing Center. Various church congregations came together to create The Refuge as an all-volunteer emergency shelter program providing overnight housing for men and women as well as hot meals, transportation and fellowship. The Refuge began by “rotating” weekly among area congregational facilities during the cold winter months. More than 400 volunteers and donors sustained the shelter by staying overnight, donating funds and in-kind personal product/services, offering fellowship and preparing/serving meals.
The Refuge is now in its tenth season. To date, 5500 overnight stays have been provided to approximately 500 men, women and children, Today’s Refuge has evolved to provide overnight shelter and access to other services through the use of private facilities and area service providers. The Refuge office is now housed in the Otsego County United Way building. As part of its growth, The Refuge continues to provide financial support for overnight stays but has also become a “navigator” helping hundreds more to access the local social service network in search of vital services to help them end their homelessness.
The Refuge has created strong service relationships in the community: The Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency (NEMCSA), Otsego County United Way, Otsego County Food Pantry, Northern Michigan Opioid Response Consortium, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Adult Protective Services, Otsego County Sheriff’s Department, Northeast Public Health Department, The Caring Closet, Otsego County Commission on Aging Advocacy Office, Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health, OMH, and more. Together we have provided life-sustaining assistance in our community.

So I’d like to make a post to address a few issues. Being the page we are we strive to keep our community and surrounding communities up to date on crime or other issues that’s come through our page. And keep our community updated on accurate information. We have other resources that share information as well (scanner pages) but I’d like to make one thing known. If an event that results in death and or severe injuries or anything that results in a family member who your directly related to and they wish to keep it a private matter. Please let us know and we can make the proper updates so you can handle your business privately. Not putting any information out there but we were contacted by a individual who expressed some concern about a recent event that happened and how that individual was notified of this incident (found out on Facebook) and that was not our intention. But we as a group cannot be aware of these issues unless we’re told. We respect and sympathize with all issues that happen including death. But going forward if something that’s death related and your immediate family. Please msg our page and express that so we can turn the comments off and or delete them and update the post saying the family members want to keep this a private matter. We have no problems respecting that. But we can’t just sit here and monitor all negativity in the comments. It’s going to be 2025 soon and unfortunately people are as****es and I apologize but these are our steps. But please know that we post to keep the community updated.
