Starting Thursday an arctic air mass will move through the central plains with a reinforcing shot of cold air on Saturday. Expect wind chill values to be in the -15 to -25 range. These conditions can lead to frostbite and hypothermia in minutes.

UPDATE (1/9/24, 5:30 AM): City and County crews have begun working on clearing up roads this morning. All highways in SWKS remain closed as of this moment per KDOT. Please stop or limit travel until roads have been cleared. If you are stranded, please call the non-emergency line at (620) 276-1300.

UPDATE (7:30 PM): Road conditions continue to deteriorate due to the snowfall and high winds. All area first responders are currently out doing everything they can to reach stranded motorists throughout the city and county while traveling in zero visibility conditions. If you become stranded, you are advised to shelter in place inside your vehicle, keep your heater on, and periodically check the tailpipe to make sure it’s clear of any snow. If you don’t have to travel, PLEASE STAY HOME!

UPDATE (5:30 PM): Per the Kansas Department of Transportation, all highways in southwest Kansas have been closed.

UPDATE (3:45 PM): All area First Responders are currently working on various calls around the city. All travel within the city is being asked to be limited or stopped unless for an emergency. If you don’t have to travel, PLEASE STAY HOME!

UPDATE (3:00 PM): No injuries from the traffic incident at Highway 50 and Schulman Avenue and motorists are safe at the scene. Another accident has been reported at Highway 50 and Farmland Road with unknown injuries.

ADDITIONAL HIGHWAY CLOSINGS: US-83 from Garden City to the Nebraska line; US-50 from Cimarron to the Colorado line; and K-156 from

Santa isn’t ready to go back to school yet! Due to expected inclement weather conditions, all Garden City Public Schools facilities will be closed to the public on Monday, January 8th.

The Board of Education meeting will proceed as normal at 6pm and will be open to the public.

Staff members are not required to report to work, unless specifically instructed by their supervisor.
