A photo from 1910 shows William Conklin and Fred Masters outside their store. The first store in Galt was built by John McFarland on the corner of 4th and B Streets. When John Brewster began building his store, he moved that building south and built the Brewster Building on the same site (out of the photo on the left). In 1908, Conklin and Masters removed that building and built this one. Fred Masters left Galt in 1911. William Conklin continued to operate a jewelry shop out of the building. In 1923, he replaced it with a building you see today on the same site. William Conklin died in 1933.

In the year 1900, a pipeline salesman named W.S. Porter convinced the presidents of the five most prominent companies in the Kern River Oil Field of California to form a new company in exchange for stocks and bonds for the appraised value of their properties. This agreement became the Associated Gas Co. Over the years, Associated Gas Stations appeared up and down the Central Valley of California, including Galt. The company also added a terminal in Galt on 3rd Street along the Southern Pacific tracks (photo). Around 1930, Associated Gas became "Associated Flying A." Eventually, the Associated brand faded and became "Flying A."

Thanks to the Greer family, we now have Dr. Vernon Greer's medical bag, microscope, and otoscope. They will be on display when the Rae House Museum opens March 5th.

Public Works staff will be flushing water lines during the months of February and March. This will normally occur between the hours of 8:00am - 2:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Water line flushing is an annual activity required by the State. It is necessary to avoid the potential for any undesirable odor, taste, or discoloration in the water, and ensure the water quality for City residents. If you see a fire hydrant discharging water down the gutter in the next couple of months, it is most likely City Public Works staff conducting this required task.

Contact Public Works at 209-366-7260 with any questions.

William Robinson founded Robinson's Feeds in 1906. The store sold hay and grain and later wood and coal to local farmers. William's son Willard took over the store and add several additional items, including poultry supplies. In 1946, Willard's son-in-law Ed Olson (who married Evelyn Robinson), son Emory Robinson, and nephew Leroy Weaver, all back from World War II service, bought the business from Willard. Ed and Evie Olson bought out the two other partners within ten years and expanded the business, opening this store in Galt in 1948. Fire damage closed the Galt Robinson's Feed in 2014.

This group of Galt friends posed for a photo on October 4, 1902, at the Thomas Swift Ferguson Lumber Yard next to A Street's tracks. In front of them is a load of Zinfandel grapes ready to be shipped from Ferguson's loading dock. During harvest, farmers used all available loading docks to get their crops to market. The rail yard between A and F Streets bristled with activity in the fall. A couple of famous Galt faces appear in the photo in the form of Charlie Pritchard (second from left) and Maude "Bunty" Quiggle (sixth from left). Behind the group are advertisements for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show appearing in Sacramento.

The Galt area is anticipating high winds and more rain over the next several days. The grounds at the Galt cemetery are over-saturated, resulting in several downed trees and sinkholes. Out of abundance of caution the cemetery will be closed until the safety of visitors can be assured. Thank you for your understanding.

🚧 Flood Watch in Effect Until 10:00pm 🚧

Please use caution and drive slowly on City streets due to localized flooding in various areas. City crews have been working since early this morning in response.

Due to the steady to heavy rains over the past few days, the ground is saturated and the storm drain systems are having to handle more runoff than normal. Creeks and channels are running very high and there is a flood watch in effect until 10:00pm tonight.

The City has a self-serve sandbag station set-up just north of the Municipal Services Building at 495 Industrial Drive (at the north gate). Sand and bags are available. Residents will need to bring their own shovel to fill the sandbags. Sandbags are limited to 10 per household.

Please report any significant street flooding to the City of Galt non-emergency line at (209) 366-7000.
