Getting ready to start my 24th year homeschooling! I have students in 10th and 11th grade this year. Both are using Math-U-See Geometry.

Teaching young children to read can be a major challenge. I have taught 5 of my 7 children to read and have some experience in this area. I'm going to be posting some reading helps for homeschool parents. Here's my first suggestion...

I used this book for one of my sons and my own daughter has used it when teaching her oldest daughter. Here's some thoughts on this curriculum:

PROS:
---Affordable! $20-25
---Non-consumable. Can be used with multiple students.
---Easy to use!
---Short lessons in just 15-20 minutes a day.
---It only took about half the book to have my granddaughter reading and decoding words.

CONS:
---Book is set up simply and is not very engaging/colorful.
---Some would call it rather cut-and-dried.
---Not the best curriculum for a hands-on learner.

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is an old stand-by in the homeschool community. It can be a great place to start if you're looking for something simple. You can even find used copies on eBay.

Real homeschooling looks like me still in my pjs on Monday morning doing mid-morning lesson planning!

Homeschooling is NOT recreating public school at home. After 20 years of doing this, we keep different hours. Most schoolwork is done between 10:30-11 a.m. to 4 p.m. As long as they complete their work, I’m flexible as to when it gets done. A regular school day usually takes no more than 3-4 hours. They can also work ahead if they have a special event and want a day off. For reference, I’m teaching 8th, 9th, and 12th this year and they’re very self-directed.
