Earlier this week, several members our department had the chance to participate in a seminar focused on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The seminar, titled "Post Traumatic Purpose" and led by Travis Howze, was created for Firefighters, Law Enforcement Officers, EMS personnel, Active Military & Veterans, Dispatchers, Corrections Officers, Healthcare Workers, and their families.

Mr. Howze, a retired Marine, ex-Charleston firefighter, and former law enforcement officer, shared his personal experiences that led to his early retirement due to PTSD. A particularly impactful revelation for our staff was the statistic that first responders are more likely to die from PTSD-related issues than in the line of duty. Mr. Howze now dedicates his efforts to educating others on the pressures faced by first responders, identifying early signs of PTSD, and managing the condition post-diagnosis.
