Had a little chat with Hobby Farms magazine a while back about my birds. There are so many breeds to raise, it can be hard narrowing down your flock. I prefer a utilitarian approach to breed selection; choosing egg production and color as primary determinants. Of course, it’s also important to make selections based on your climate. I also add a couple of interesting or attractive breeds, just for good measure. 🐓

These unique heritage chicken breeds range from distinctive to off the wall, and they can be difficult to find. But, for many, they’re worth the time and effort to track down.

So, a few weeks ago we had 2 of our runner ducks vanish without a trace. We have our fair share of predators, so we assumed they had wondered off and had either become lost or, worse, food! Last week out of nowhere, the ducks returned for food and water and, again, vanished. At that point it became likely that the girls were broody and nested outside of their coop or run areas. But they have evaded me so far. Today as I looked for flowers along the rock wall on our property, I found this. Still haven’t found the other duck or nest.
