Can a novel's protagonist also be its primary antagonist? Can a medieval tale be told alongside a modern one with similar themes?
These are the reasons I LOVE being an author.
In my latest project, Abbot and the Stone, young archeologist Valencio DeCaria follows a mystery he hopes to someday place his name in Halls of Noteriety.
We, the reader, are rooting for his success. Why wouldn't we? Most of us entertain dreams we know would alter our lives for the better. Striving toward something with meaning is the spice of our existence.
At the same time, we follow Sir Martinot, the 11th century crusader who shows us the real story behind the treasure Valencio seeks, piece by piece intertwined within the chapters. Martinot, too, plays himself out to be the mirrored walking contradiction Valencio is.
Sound complicated? It really is not. You as the reader are unaware these elements exist, but it can be these facets that keep you drawn to the story.
Abbot and the Stone will be a winter writing project and will be in print sometime this spring.

It takes incredible insight to be able to unravel complexities that make a story intriguing without confusing the reader.

I haven’t done any writing in the past ten months. As a writer that’s a tragedy. As everybody knows, life can get away from us and weeks can literally turn into months.
The ideas I have inside me are building. I see a human interest novel where two old friends who hadn’t seen each other in decades get together over a weekend reminiscing about their youth until love sneaks it’s way back into their lives. I see a mystery novel about a boy who gets rescued during a storm by a mysterious elderly stranger who looks suspiciously like himself. And my Shadows and Solices fantasy series is slowly developing.
This fall, gotta get back into writing!
