We are BUSY this month with presentations for the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Council. Nothing makes me happier than helping local artists, businesses, and organizations improve their reach with social media. What questions would YOU ask about having effective social channels?

🤔 Here's the irony. We spend so much time working on our clients' content, that we don't have time to work on our own! Isn't that a typical case of the shoemaker's children not having shoes? We've got to do something about that! 😊

PSA: Check the expiration date of your SSL certificate on your website. There are pesky reminders that will come from your hosting service to remind you and you probably move them straight to trash. They have become VERY strict about these lapsing and browsers, like Chrome, will stop allowing your site to be viewed. So take a peek or it can cost you days without your site.

Lately, it feels like I should be writing a blog about the “Animals of Treehouse”. There are three plus the myriad of birds that visit the birdfeeder that I have tucked into a tree - far from my cat.

This is Theo and he turned 1 yesterday. He is known to be sitting on my feet, jumping up to say “Hi!” while I am on a Zoom, savoring a sliver of sunlight while stretched on the floor or barking at me to take a play break. He’s a marvelous work partner and he always has this adorable expression on his face. I feel so fortunate to be able to work with this guy nearby!

Do you have your fur babies with you throughout the day? Do they remind you to play?

Yesterday and today have been saturated in emotions. Shock. Sadness. Heartbreak. Then I had a gentle reminder that as an islander (for 25 years this year!) I’ve learned to be resourceful and build beauty with the talented and warm-hearted people that surround me. This community LIFTS people and they can build something magnificent out of a mere vision. I know there is sadness and heartbreak right now and a loss of beloved history, but don’t forget that there will come a point when people are ready for their vision to come to life. These creative and driven business owners will find a beautiful way to preserve the history that created this special place we call home.

Also, thank you Mother Nature for pausing your gale force winds for a day yesterday. 🌬

I love the phrase “Bloom where you are planted.” One of the many things that I appreciate about being a business owner is that I get to choose my clients. When I created Treehouse, we started with two driving principles:
1) Our clients would be bridge builders with a great story to tell. Their intent is to lift others.
2) The Joy Switch - our clients need to flip our Joy Switch. We work with people whom we LOVE working with day in and day out.
It’s that simple.

I am absolutely loving my new space. Clear space, clear thoughts, organization embedded directly into my workspace and now…to breathe a little life into it!! We ARE Treehouse after all and with the birdfeeder and Spring birds chirping and our lovely new assortment of plants from Browne's Garden Center it is feeling more like “my space” each and every day.

Creating digital spaces to tell our clients’ stories comes so easily. It’s amazing how tripped up I can get creating my own in real life. Bringing nature in is always the right answer!

Here we go. Gently stepping into 2022. While we are feeling a little bit tentative about what this new year will bring, we are also feeling an overwhelming need to PURGE a lot from the last two years (maybe more?). A lot has built up as we've reacted to an ever-shifting landscape. The new year brings us a moment to reflect on best practices, streamlining our workflow, looking at the results of our choices over the past year and determining what we can get rid of to achieve one of our most important company goals: Keep it simple.

Treehouse Goals:
1) Keep the Joy Switch On
This is a really important thing for us to keep in mind while we are working. Is this situation creating constant angst, frustration or other icky feelings? We remind ourselves that we have a choice - always. "Does this keep the Joy Switch on?" is a question we ask ourselves in the beginning of every new project / client relationship. Do you have something similar to this for your company?

2) Keep it Simple
In the world of web design and social media marketing, it is easy to quickly over-complicate things. We constantly strive to find the path and tools that will reduce frustration levels for our team and yours.

3) Build Bridges
When you are a content creator, a variety of opportunities come your way. At Treehouse, we always reflect on whether a project is a Bridge Builder or not. There is already plenty of negativity in the digital space and we feel no need to contribute to that in any way, shape or form. We are here to help you tell your story in a way that your audience will relate to and leave them with a feeling of being inspired, entertained or informed.

We are looking to hire a paid intern who is creative, tech-savvy, good at problem-solving, has an affinity for organization and keeping a schedule, and is ready to learn. We are looking for someone who has an understanding and willingness to implement data-driven marketing strategies.

A background in graphic design with an interest in building out new e-mail and digital marketing strategies is a plus.

Due to Covid, this person would be working from home and would need to provide their own reliable internet connection.

PREREQUISITES:
* Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, or other affiliated programs. We have open minds about this.

* Excellent writing and strong verbal communication skills.

* Familiarity with Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Why a Cedar Waxwing? When I was talking to our graphic designer about our new logo, we started talking about birds. (This isn't an uncommon occurrence if you know me.) He asked me about my favorites and I mentioned that I loved the character and beauty of the Cedar Waxing.

Character? Yes! You see Cedar Waxwings live in communities. If you are lucky, you will see them lined up on branches. One will pick a berry and pass it down to the one on the end, then it will pick another and another until each bird has had one. I had always read about this but then I witnessed it while volunteering at Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. I used to hang out there and feed baby birds.

As we talked more about the Cedar Waxwings, I realized that Treehouse turned a corner to focus on our community. We had several out-of-state clients, but during the pandemic, our neighbors were under severe stress and we decided to turn our focus home.

You know what? It worked out. Take care of your community and they will take care of you. Take a berry and pass it down. We like to think of the Cedar Waxwing calling out the story of YOUR business to the community as part of our logo. We believe in you.

As a Small Business owner, it is easy to always push toward (or through) the next thing without acknowledging your victories. Allow yourself to pause for a moment and say, "Good job for _____!" What are you are filling in the blank with? We want to know AND we want to know how you are going to build on it.

Today, I would like to take a moment to celebrate the Treehouse Team. For me, they are a HUGE victory. When I started TCDS, I couldn't have imagined being surrounded by these incredible people who get it done. Creative, driven, and strong, they inspire me each and every day. We move forward 100mph and pause and laugh when we need it. Their commitment to our clients and to our team makes coming to work fun and fulfilling - thank you.

How are we going to build on it? We are adding another member, hopefully soon.

Every once in awhile, we need to take a leap. That leap might be creating a company that provides a service, a product or an experience and we are in 100%...ok, maybe even 200%.
