If you can aim and focus a camera and have skill with composition, then a thorough command of lighting is key to producing quality images. I'm teaching myself to relight portraits using a series of tightly guarded secrets with Photoshop. It's part of my current project, "Photoshop Digital Lighting." Life hasn't enough drama (yet).
